Grade 1-3–Truss's picture-book version of her adult bestseller tackles the topic of commas and what can go wrong when they are misused. The title is derived from an old joke in which a panda misunderstands correct panda behavior after reading a poorly punctuated wildlife guide. Versions of two identically worded sentences are presented side by side, demonstrating the difference in meaning achieved when a comma is added or subtracted. Timmons's humorous watercolor cartoons bring the point home. In one spread, the sentence on the left (Look at that huge hot dog!) is illustrated with a gigantic sausage, while that on the right (Look at that huge, hot dog!) shows a tall, sweltering canine. The author cleverly selects examples with the potential for comical (and grammatically correct) revisions. Endnotes elaborate on comma usage in more technical terms. While a title on grammar may need hand selling, both read-aloud audiences and independent readers will discover the potent possibilities of punctuation. Yet it proves very effective, thanks to entertaining repackaging that narrows the original's broad purview to the comma, and focuses on cartoonist Timmons' interpretations of humorous comma-related goofs akin to the one referenced by the title (the punchline of an old joke about a panda, here set in a library rather than a bar). While dissolving into giggles over the change in meaning between "Eat here, and get gas," or "Eat here and get gas" (likely to be the most popular of the 14 sentence pairs given), children will find themselves gaining an instinctive understanding of the "traffic signals of language," even without the concluding spread explaining the whys and wherefores. This is a no-brainer for language arts class, but also recommend it to fans of Jon Agee's books of palindromes, William Steig's delightful alphabet rebuses, or introductory grammar books by Brian Cleary. I am a little disappointed by this book, but it was my own fault. I should have read the specifications more closely and notice that it has so few pages and that it was published by scholastic. Then I would have known to expect a few clever pairs of sentences with engaging graphics and not much else.
We love this book! We first purchased it several years ago for our children, and then again this month to give as a gift. Everyone laughs, both children and adults, as they read it. I only wish it were longer. The illustrations show what hilariously horrendous things can happen when you use poor grammar. For example, "Let's eat, grandma!" is much preferred by grandmother than "Let's eat grandma!"
Wait, that should be, "Lets eat, Grandma!" Commas save lives!Buy all of Lynne Truss's books. Seriously! Okay, I'm a grammar nerd, I admit it. I got Eats, Shoots and Leaves and just loved it. Then, I learned about her "picture books." You can look at pictures side by side--same sentence, different punctuation. Perfect for all classrooms, great gift for coworkers, even college students. Great for grammar lesson plans (have kids make and draw their own). Just remember that there are a few differences between English grammar rules in America and the UK.
A great kids book that can make learning grammar rules fun (wow - I never thought I would put those words together in a sentence)! Everybody I have shown this to loves it. There are wonderfully funny drawings on each page to emphasize exactly what each sentence means so readers can grasp exactly what is wrong. I think I learned more from this book than I did from my 2nd grade grammar teacherDo not confuse this book with Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation (also by Lynne Truss).
I love this book! I'm a fanatic for grammar and this helps to teach children early on. It also gives grownups a chuckle along the way. Just in case you can't figure out why a page is incorrect, there is an answer key in the back.
As a teacher of students with learning disabilities, I am always looking for something to teach needed skills in a new way. By the time they reach high school, students should have learned grammar and punctuation rules - but all too often haven't. I suspect this is partly because of the way they have been taught in the past, and I have found that presenting the information in a new and often humorous way helps students assimilate learning they have missed in previous years. I have used the original Eats, Shoots and Leaves in class, and the pictures in this version will be even more useful.
This is not the originall book. It is just a series of examples of bad grammar. I wanted to return it, but I missed the deadline.
This is a very cute and very fun book that makes the importance and use of punctuation easy to understand. It is a book written for children, but I read and enjoyed it as an adult! It definitely will be my go-to gift item for kids - fun but functional!
