I'm a big fan of Paul Krugman and my views about good government closely mirror his own however I may have read one too many books by writers with similar ideologies because there was very little new for me in this book. His one big idea is that many of the political decisions made in the last 60 years ago are based around race. For instance he argues that the reason that the United States doesn't have universal healthcare is because southern politicians (correctly) believed it would have forced the region to racially integrate their hospitals. Republicans have successfully leveraged the racial fears of southern whites to create a powerful voting block but as the U.S. becomes less white and whites become less apt to shiver at racial scare tactics, the Republican's may find this blunt tool has become a heavy anchor (see George Allen). The core of the book is something that Paul Krugman has been harping on for years; that the gap between the rich and poor has increased to levels not seen since America's Gilded Age and the growing disparity shows no sign of abating. Krugman writes, "Money buys influence, and as the richest few percent of American's have grown richer... they have become rich enough to buy themselves a party" (some might argue two parties). So what we have is a feedback loop. The wealthy can buy influence, to gain votes, to allow them to grow wealthier and buy more influence. It is a huge threat to democracy but as the writer states, `From the beginning... the [conservative] movement was profoundly undemocratic, concerned, above all, with defending religion and property'. Krugman's point is that left to its own devices our economy will continue to inexorably swing towards the wealthy unless government intervenes.Krugman is your classic liberal economist standing opposed to the Darwinian winner takes all economic philosophies of pure free market capitalism. Despite George W. Bush's attempt to demonstrate just how corrupt and incompetent the federal government can be, Krugman's still holds the faith that harnessing the power of a nation of over 300 million people can achieve great things and only through government intervention can inequities be managed. The author refers to the current strain of Conservativism as movement conservativism to differentiate it from classic conservativism. The difference is that movement conservatism is a new strain of radicalism that desires to tear down the system, the system being the welfare state that has been in place for the past 60 years. It's not that I disagree at all with what Krugman is saying. It's that I've heard it all before. I already realize that the fuel of the Republican Party is cronyism. I'm aware of the very real `right wing conspiracy' and how it has created an interlocking set of partisan institutions. I know that CEO salaries are skyrocketing while middle class incomes have stagnated for over a decade. Regardless of how much I may agree with his ideas I have to remove one star for lack of originality. Others who are less voracious readers of liberal politics may find this book more enlightening but for me it was just a rehash. Still, Paul Krugman is an important voice and I hope his message is heard.

I grew up an odd child because of my obsession with politics. At the age of 6, I was watching the 1992 Presidential Debates between Clinton, Bush 41, and Perot. When I became a teenager, I identified as a liberal Democrat; however, as I grew up my environment helped changed my mindset and over the past 10 years I've identified more with the Libertarian point of view. I've voted for candidates of all major parties; however, as our political system continues to fail it becomes more evident to my mind that Liberalism has worked and can work again to bring our system back in line with what made America great during WWII and after.Paul Krugman's book offers glimpses of the past, as he recalls the rise of FDR and his New Deal Coalition. The author also highlights the formation of a staunch conservative hatred for the New Deal that has never gone away and today embodies the heart and soul of the Republican Party. Professor Krugman does a terrific job of explaining how a fringe group took over the Republican Party and continues to win elections despite the fact that most voters disagree with most of the tenants of "movement conservatism". My favorite part of the book is the description of how wealth inequality happened in America, and what we can do to fix it. A society where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer is not one we should live in...we had that once, and it led to a Great Depression. If you are looking for a book that describes how Liberals think of America, and you are open minded to the idea that government has a place in society beyond fighting endless wars, then I recommend you read this book. It is most definitely worth your time.

Great read for those who want a new New Deal that will reinvigorate the middle class and create a society full of opportunity. Krugman does a wonderful job explaining the forces attempting to roll back the New Deal starting in the 1980s.

Bauer's book would be more appropriately titled "A History of the Late Middle Ages" - or, to be more Euro-centric, "The High Middle Ages," the book really ending when the Renaissance began (in 1453). For those seeking a book on the Renaissance proper, look elsewhere, but do give this marvelous history your attention as well. There is much to recommend here (the confusion of the time period not withstanding.)First, this is truly a "world history" - not the typical Euro-centric history with the obligatory nod to civilizations in the Near East and Asia. While much attention is paid to the political goings on in Europe (about 45% of the book), attention and detail is also given to civilizations in Africa (5%), Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia (about 10%), India (10%), China and the Mongols (12%), the Near East and Byzantium (16%) and the Americas (2%). The narrative thread shows the growing interconnectedness between civilizations in terms of economics, culture, religion and politics.Second, the depth and detail Bauer provides in relating a world history is astonishing. Each chapter is between 6 - 8 pages, but they are packed with information about political interrelationships and the aims, goals and hopes of various groups and families from popes to emperors to pretenders to the throne. This makes for a relatively fast-paced read, but it also gives a solid overview of the forces at play. Finally, the writing is superb. Bauer's prose is fluid and geared to a general audience which makes the reading easy and entertaining. Her works cited is extensive and comprehensive with a super-abundance of really outstanding works for those interested in more detail on a given topic, time period or event. In spite of my prickliness regarding the title, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a well-written history with a genuinely global scope.

I wish I could split stars on this rating. This is a well-researched, well-written book deserving of 5 stars if it had a different title. What it is NOT is a history of the Renaissance world. Writing a preface, as Bauer has done, claiming that the roots of the Italian Renaissance can be found in the Renaissance of the 12th Century helps the reader understand her starting point. It justifies beginning the book at the year 1100. It does not, however, justify ending the book without touching on the Renaissance that one is expected to know something about if they claim to have studied that time period. There seems to be a trend by recent historians to consider the Italian Renaissance as the beginning of the Modern Era, rather than as a separate time period between the middle ages and the modern era, so I am guessing that there will be a fourth book in this series that begins with what is traditionally considered the Renaissance. Unfortunately, someone who has already studied the middle ages and wants to next move on to the Renaissance, this book does not deliver.

This whole series is really enjoyable to read. Its like back to college again only without the pressure of memorization which in this case seems to be very difficult. I have these books on audible so I was able to listen to the correct pronunciation of the complicated names within the book. Was a fun enjoyable read with both the book and the audio going at the same time. Also liked the second volume. The Medieval World. Highly recommend. If you can get the audio with audible you'll enjoy that also. These names get very tough to pronounce correctly.

The History of the Renaissance World covers the period from the rediscovery of Aristotle through the conquest of Constantinople. The chapters are relatively short and rotate around the world in a relatively chronological manner. The history is far from dry, and often is downright funny. Bauer has quite a talent at telling a story. I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in history.

Reading this work of history is like watching an engaging documentary. Susan writes in a way that reads like an enthusiastic narrator in the readers mind. Her infectious passion for history is easily recognizable and renders the reader transfixed.Remarkably done!It should be in every High School!!

I have read her other 2 chronological history books. All were enjoyable and thorough. Looking forward to when she continues forward in time with another book.

Reading it now - she is a gifted writer with a touch that is both light and deep, something difficult to sustain. I look forward to buying and reading many more of her books.

I bought this for our 17 year old home-schooling senior, and he loves it. It's informative, doesn't "talk down" to teens, yet isn't all edu-speak and boring. Awesome job, Ms. Bauer!
