As a longtime fan of The Hot Zone, I wanted to love this book; in fact, I tried to love this book. Alas, that was not to be.While the information it contains was as fascinating as I had hoped and expected, the book could have benefited from more skillful editing. The writing was so disjointed that it not only detracts from the story, it was distracting in general. At times, the writing was so disjointed that it even became annoying to read.So sadly, while I've read The Hot Zone numerous times and added it to my home library in a print edition, I won't be reading The Demon In The Freezer again, and I doubt you'll read it more than once either. For that reason if you still want to read it (and admittedly, there are far worse books out there) I suggest you save the trees, and get the Kindle edition.

I usually like reading true-crime books, and I generally don't seek out books written by any particular author; I just want a good read about a great story that I've heard about. But there is one exception: Jack Olsen. He may no longer be with us, but his books surely live on, and I'm always taking a peek to see if another one of his works has recently become available in the Kindle format. Some people have even called him "An American Treasure," and I don't have any problem with that statement.And Richard Preston is surely right up there as well. This is my second read from him, the first being, "The Hot Zone," and I was mesmerized while reading that, just like I was mesmerized while reading "The Demon in the Freezer." With both of these gentlemen though, I will say that, if you read any of their works, you may have trouble sleeping at night. After all, Mr. Olsen liked to write about serial killers while Mr. Preston likes to write about viruses. And it's hard to say which one of these real-life scourges might kill you first.Most authors use flowery language to get their points across, while neither of these gentlemen ever seem to add one unnecessary word. It's as if they write a chapter, backtrack, and then remove any words that are unneeded. It is the case that, when telling a story, words often do just get in the way; natural language is somewhat flawed, after all. But you wouldn't know it while reading the works from these two masters.I do like how Mr. Preston describes a new character for the first time in a chapter. He must have a template, and he must follow that template religiously. You might read something like, "John Smith is a doctor at John Hopkins. He has gray hair, parted in the middle, with a slight frown on his face." Etc. I like it. Why reinvent the wheel, after all? But Mr. Preston's writings are far from just workmanlike; when he gets into the meat of a subject, you know that the potatoes are soon coming. However, you just hope that you'll be able to keep down a meal after reading an unsavory description of how some poor soul dies from, say, smallpox.Keeping in the spirit of both writers, I'll keep this review short and sweet. But I will add the following: for fans of Richard Preston, I highly encourage you to try a book or two from Jack Olsen as well. You surely won't be disappointed, either way.

The “demon” referred to in the title is smallpox. This book presents a history of the disease starting in ancient times but in greater detail with the “Eradication” of the disease in the 1970s and the more modern debates on weaponizing or destroying the last stockpiles of the disease. In this discussion, the author gives a detailed history and explanation of the disease and its potential. Sometimes, the technical aspects of the science involved get slightly tedious, but the real-life examples mixed in with the technical aspects keep the story interesting.The author begins the book, and periodically returns to, the story of the 2001 anthrax attacks in the U.S. (called “Amerithrax”). Because the book is supposedly about smallpox, the long discussions on anthrax seem out-of-place. Granted, the Amerithrax story does illustrate how easily someone could use smallpox in an attack, but at the same time, the book seems almost like two different stories mashed together as opposed to one narrative. Since the book was published in 2002, the unfinished story of the Amerithrax attacks seems even more like an unneeded addition to the discussion about smallpox.As for writing style, the author’s background in journalism shows through, creating a story that is readable, but not as in-depth as most historical or scientific books. The he gives personal details about the scientists involved in the smallpox and anthrax studies (like the cars they drive) and hints at who the perpetrator of the Amerithrax attacks might be without technically issuing blame – both of which seem completely unnecessary in the larger context of the story, especially since the scientist he seems to point to was not the person ultimately convicted of the crime.I rated this as “4 stars” because I think it deserves more than "It was ok," especially since the information regarding smallpox and anthrax was informative. But the rest of the side stories, and the speculation regarding the Amerithrax case, lessen the overall value of the book.

A good, quick read. But structurally, I got the sense the anthrax story didn't have enough content for a full book - it starts out as a compelling investigation into the Anthrax attacks, then goes off, somewhat unexpectedly, on a multi-chapter discussion about Smallpox. A scary thing, to be sure, but it was too much of a tangent, and left me wondering when he would return to the original storyline. It strikes me as an effort to get out a book in a timely manner (it was published in 2002) but before the story was truly fleshed out enough to be told. For example, there is no mention of Bruce Ivins and his perhaps controversial focus as a person of interest and the consequences of it, nor the resolution of Hatfill's devastating tenure as person of interest. Moreover, there is essentially no questioning of the FBI's methods - so it comes off a bit propagandistic. You get a sense he's a little too chummy with his characters. (Preston in fact co-wrote a book on smallpox with DA Henderson).

About a quarter through this novel which is a sequel to "same different as me." Must admit, I was reluctant tobuy a sequel because over the years have been disappointed. BUT I found myself involved and captivatedafter the first few pages. The written words are sensitive, thought provoking and don to earth. Know as I goon reading this book, that I will slow down because I won't want to finish this "fine wine" too quickly-- becausethen what do I do.... Probably should have started-out saying that I put down several other books that lostmy interest early-on... Give us more, please

This is the 2nd of the 3 books written about the true story of Denver, Ron and Debbie (the other 2 books are "Same kind of different as me" and "Workin' our way home", and they are ALL very good!I've read all 3 books within 2 days and am so grateful to have learned so much, from God Himself. For it was so apparent that God alone could pull through what have happened and the good effect would go on for a very long time.Praise and thanks to the Lord Jesus and may we all be encouraged and strengthened to "make a difference" in whatever position and capacity the Lord has put us in. When someone who has nothing materially could walk with the Lord so closely, we can too.

I absolutely loved the first book ' same kind of different as me',but did not expect the follow up to be as good. It is an awesome read,so inspiring and a true GOD send!! It was great to read again so many of Mr. Denver's wonderful insights into GOD and GOD's love towards all people and GOD's wonderful ways!! What a blessing this book is! I'd give it 10 stars if I could!

I was happy to hear there was another book. This one is about their lives after Same Kind of Different as Me. So it does repeat some of the stories from the first book but that was a good refresher while reading this one.

It’s always fulfilling to actually read the rest of the story. No more wondering what happened next. This book finishes the story and in the sweetest way.

One of my favorite books ever. Very inspirational.

I was touched deeply by the friendship established in this book. These people are such an inspiration! I have to confess that I cried through the last few chapters.

I found this second book very interesting as well as the first book that I read, The Same Kind of Different as Me. The new people written about in this book are inspiring. Thanks for the experience.

About the Author

James J. Mazza, PhD, is Professor in the College of Education at the University of Washington, where he teaches and conducts research in the field of adolescent mental health. Dr. Mazza’s research focuses particularly on adolescent internalizing disorders, such as depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, exposure to violence, and, especially, suicidal behavior. His work also examines the complex relationships among adolescent mental health issues, social–emotional abilities, and academic skills through multi-tiered systems of support. Dr. Mazza has written extensively on how to identify youth who are at risk for suicidal behavior, as well as on how to develop social–emotional learning (SEL) curricula to help all students learn emotion regulation skills. He has worked with over 30 school districts and thousands of school personnel in developing and implementing comprehensive school-based suicide identification and prevention strategies for adolescents. Dr. Mazza also provides consultation and training to school personnel internationally on implementing DBT STEPS-A in schools, on developing mental health intervention services within multi-tiered systems of support, and on integrating SEL curricula as a part of a school system’s role in educating the whole child. He is the coowner of a private practice in Seattle, Washington. Elizabeth T. Dexter-Mazza, PsyD, is the co-owner of a private practice in Seattle, Washington, where she conducts comprehensive dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and skillsbased coaching for adolescents and adults and provides parent coaching and support to family members and friends of individuals with emotion dysregulation. Dr. Dexter-Mazza provides training and consultation to schools, mental health agencies, and individuals in implementing DBT skills and therapy. She is also a trainer for Behavioral Tech, a company that offers DBT trainings to mental health professionals around the world. Dr. Dexter-Mazza completed her postdoctoral fellowship under the direction of Marsha M. Linehan at the Behavioral Research and Therapy Clinics (BRTC) at the University of Washington. She served as Clinical Director and a research therapist at the BRTC for Dr. Linehan’s research studies, which provided both individual DBT and DBT group skills training. Dr. Dexter-Mazza has published several book chapters and peer-reviewed articles on DBT, borderline personality disorder, and graduate school training in managing suicidal clients. Alec L. Miller, PsyD, is Co-Founder and Clinical Director of Cognitive and Behavioral Consultants, White Plains and New York, New York, and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York. Dr. Miller served for over 20 years as Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychology, Director of the Adolescent Depression and Suicide Program, and Associate Director of Psychology Training at Montefiore Medical Center. He is a scientific advisor to the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention and the National Educational Alliance of Borderline Personality Disorder, a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, and past Chair of the International Society for the Improvement and Training of DBT. He has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and books on topics including DBT, adolescent suicide, childhood maltreatment, and borderline personality disorder. He is the coauthor of DBT® Skills in Schools, DBT® Skills Manual for Adolescents, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy with Suicidal Adolescents. He has conducted over 400 lectures and workshops around the world, training thousands of mental health professionals in DBT.  Jill H. Rathus, PhD, is Professor of Psychology at Long Island University Post, where she directs the DBT scientist-practitioner training program within the clinical psychology doctoral program. She is also Co-Director and Co-Founder of Cognitive Behavioral Associates, a group private practice in Great Neck, New York, specializing in DBT and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Her clinical and research interests include DBT, CBT, adolescent suicidality, intimate partner violence, anxiety disorders, and assessment. Dr. Rathus has developed and conducted programs in DBT for adolescents and adults as well as males referred for intimate partner violence, and has received foundation and university funding to study, adapt, and develop assessment tools for DBT. Murphy, PhD, NCSP, has a private practice in Seattle, Washington, where she works with self-harming and suicidal adolescents. Excellent curriculum that can be used in the classroom with all students, in small groups, or individually with students meeting with their school counselors. There are numerous activity pages that work through important concepts related to learning to develop distress tolerance and use our emotions wisely and mindfully. A tool for "typical" students self-awareness and dysregulated students toolbox for self-regulation.

James and Liz Mazza have done a fabulous job bringing needed DBT skills to adolescents in schools. The kids won’t believe the almost immediate measurable results that they will find with practice. Their peers will hold them accountable for their homework too. The book is set up to help teachers every step of the way! I wish this class had been around when I was attempting to navigate through the junior high and high school years!

I was hoping for more stuff I could use with younger kids, but otherwise it is great!

I don't use this book everyday, but when I need it, it has EVERYTHING. There are a lot of procedures that most PCM's would never do, but it is nice to have the resource available in case I NEED to do it while on deployment or something... also to look at healing times, patient instructions, and alternative procedures for my own knowledge bank. The fracture care section is AMAZING. It is the only thing I have tabbed out in the entire book. This is the most common thing I look to this book for. Yes, there are books that are made specifically for fracture care...but I like have an all in one resource.

Purchased for class and clinical. NP program. Very great reference book!

This is one of the best books I own, I wish they would recommended it when doing my MD, the explanations are easy to follow, you get the how, what, whens and patient care, plus a full appendix section on technical instruments, how to buy equipment, prepared forms for different kind of patient consent, etc.

Great book. Comes with literally any procedure you may want. Digital copy is great to have on iPad or iPhone when book not with you.

Gives you enough information to get almost any surgery and all minor procedures. Well written. Good tips.

This is my go-to book for procedures. A must-have for primary care docs interested in outpatient procedures.

Concise and thorough instructions on basic procedures in medicine. I use it just to review occasionally something I may not have done in several months. It is a great help for residents and those in private practice. You can't always be calling a specialist for procedures in the rural areas of the US. This is a great reference.
