Review

"Silverstein is brief and brilliant...This short book has wonderful cultural-historical insights [on] every page--and suddenly Islamic history becomes, well, really interesting, understandable, related to Western history--and the present that much more explicable. The book is clear, witty, wise, and wonderful--read it." --School Library Journal Online "Silverstein deserves praise for his successful effort in offering a readable and concise Islamic history. It will be instructive to curious students of any faith. His book is a credit to the outstanding Oxford series of 'Very Short Introductions.'" --Saudi Gazette

This was a decent intro to Islamic history from a Western historian's point of view. Most books about Islam that are written by Western scholars tend to be overly critical (in my opinion). Generally I prefer to read an anthropologist's take on Islamic issues if I'm to read a piece written from a non-Muslim, simply because they are less biased. I took a chance with this one, and found it to still be pretty good.

Silverstein's monograph is a fairly quick read, and well worth the effort. The history is rather sparse, as the title implies, but it makes a nice companion to something more detailed like Berkey's "The Formation of Islam." Well-written throughout, value comes particularly in the analysis and insight developed in the later chapters and conclusion, though some may find it "controversial." Highly recommended.

The Book is so easy to understand and provides a wonderful gateway into the importance and history of Islamic religion and society. By giving historical background, the author clarifies the reasons and meanings behind 20th and 21st century events. There are many maps, photos, and short excerpts included in the book so readers can easily understand what the author is explaining.

Appreciated what I learned, the quality of the writing, the nature of the analysis. Realize that it is a "short introduction" but felt that I got a very good overview. Excellent read. Thank you.

This book is valuable not only for a historical overview of Islamic tradition, but for the insightful last chapter on current Islam and world perception of it. This book is respectful of the religion while being forthright about some of the less pretty parts of its history. The style of the book is very accessible... some scholars may say it is too broad and not deep enough, but it met my needs... I may want to read a multi-volume work in Islam in the future, but not this weekend.

Silverstein, an Oxford professor, writes with the clarity and simplicity that I would love to emulate. His exquisite style makes reading this complex history much easier than it might be in less capable hands. As for the accuracy of his historical account, I have no basis for judgment. Nevertheless, I would recommend this slight volume to anyone seeking a brief introduction to Islam. A good counterweight and a book I highly recommend is Timothy Gianotti's "In the Light of a Blessed Tree: Illuminations of Islamic Belief, Practice, and History," another wonderfully clear and incisive brief study of Islam, written by a former Catholic, now a Muslim. Gianotti's book includes autobiographical information describing how he came to Islam.

Most people are surprised that I am reading a book on Islam written by a westerner, that too, being a Muslim myself. But this is a very honest summary of the cultural and historical impact and importance of Islam. Its a very honest assessment and it got me hooked on Islamic history so much that I couldnt stop browsing the net for two weeks, scouring for more info. Very informative and provides several arguments and counter arguments, so that you can decide for yourself.

It's sometimes a difficult slog, but that's because the history of Islam is long and very convoluted. It's necessary reading for those who wish to have a deeper understanding of Islam. He proves points throughout the book then sums them up at the end. Clear and as concise as can be to do justice to a history most westerners have almost no knowledge of.

First things first - re: the trigger warnings - Shayla, our h, had an abusive husband and there are some vivid flashbacks of the abuse. They're all in italics and obviously flashbacks, so maybe it's not enough to trigger anybody, but they're in there. This is the story that I've been waiting for since book 2, when Shayla showed someone pictures of her days as a ballerina as evidence that a delicate woman could become a serious fighter. I thought he (Fuzzy) was going to be her H, but this was so much better. It's a fabulous second chance story about her first love, Zack, who left her behind to go after his fighting career with the intention of becoming worthy of her and coming back. Unfortunately, he was still quite stupid and didn't consider the repercussions of actually leaving her to follow his career. Or even, you know, telling her that he was coming back for her. He just broke her heart in one of the coldest ways possible. It was a really stupid move, and one of the few things I didn't like about this book, but I get that the story couldn't have been angsty without angst. I loved that Zack was utterly devoted once he found Shayla again, but while actions speak louder than words a girl can sometimes really need those words, and he was still occasionally TSTL.I loved Shayla, honestly. I really loved Amanda in book 2, but Shayla may have knocked her out of Redemption's top h spot. At the very least they're sharing it. I thought she reacted to situations realistically, and in most cases really intelligently. She may have gotten a little emotional (with good cause) but her only flaw was maybe letting him back in too easily. Since the whole book is his struggle to get back into her good graces, that doesn't sound right, and yet it felt like he kept making stupid mistakes and getting forgiven. I wanted him to really buckle down and come clean, tell her what his problem was instead of keeping his ego intact. His ego was quite possibly the main antagonist of the story. He had to become a good fighter to believe himself worthy of her, he had to train her because he was the best, he was the one who knew everything, yadda yadda yadda. You can be the best and not rub your ego in someone's face, Zack. This book did feel a little shorter, wrapped up a little neater and faster, but I didn't mind. It took me a few weeks to finish because I took a break when Zack irritated me and then I read some books in between. If there was anything that was wrong with the actual writing, I can't even remember and apparently it wasn't worth highlighting to point out in a review. Good grammar, good editing, good writing all around. It could have used a little bit more polish and depth, maybe a bit more about their past and how her brother interfered with their relationship. There were lots of large jumps where their relationship grew in between, so you didn't get the wonderful feeling of watching it happen.I love a good survivor story, and the kind of second chance love that didn't end because of cheating. I would have loved an AU where they were happily together and she supported him through his rise to fame, too, but I'm so happy that Shayla got such a good story.

This book had a good storyline and the writing was great. I enjoyed reading it. From learning about Shayla and Zack’s history to their split to the reunion and their conclusion made a great story. I hated the things Shayla went through after Zack left her but I loved seeing her get her strength and life back. I really liked Zack. He was strong, possessive in a protective way, loving, caring and an all around great guy. There were a few important parts of the book that I felt were cut short. For example: when Damion showed up at Redemption and Shayla walked away, that was it! We knew he was about to get beat up and she mentioned to save some for Zack. That was it. No conclusion to what happened. That was really disappointing. That’s the only example I’ll give since I don’t want to include spoilers. All in all, it was a good book and a great addition to this series.

Sorry that this was the last book in the series. As usual, it was great! Shilla the Killa finally finds love.I wish she could do one about Sandy. There were so many who could have found their HEAs.

Loved it!!!

4.5 stars

3.5 starsSecond chance romances can go either way with me I either love them or I have issues with them and Strong Hold by Sarah Castille is in the latter category. Over all I did like the story, but it wasn’t without some problems making it a challenge for me to finish. Almost 8 years after a special night between them, reunited lovers face challenges as he tries to find a way back into her heart while she keeps him at arm’s length.Shayla Tanner aka Shilla the Killa is thrown for a loop when the man who broke her teenage heart walks into the gym where she trains as a MMA fighter. Following a successful career in MMA and after a tragedy in his last fight sent him reeling, Zack Grayson can’t believe his eyes when he walks into a gym and sees the woman he’s always loved and never forgotten training like her life depends on it. So guys here’s where the story fell apart for me; broken hearts happen, it is a fact of life and I have real issues with people who can’t seem to let it go almost a decade later especially when they were teenagers when it happened. Yes, I get that these two had a special relationship and I agree that the way Zack ended it s*cked big time, but it took Shayla way too long to realize that she wouldn’t be the same woman she is today if that hadn’t happened in her life. She was really dependent on Zack as a teenager and now she is a kick a$$ and take names kind of woman and yes, there are big time reasons for that but I hated, HATED that in a roundabout way she blamed Zack for those reasons when the choices she made were HER choices. That being said, I did love that they reconnected and despite Shayla continual wishy-washy behavior in regards to their relationship I was happy to see them get to know one another as the adults they’ve become. However, for me there was too much drama, blame game, and living in the past and not enough of living in the here and now. I grew to like both characters during this book but it took me awhile which also made it difficult to keep reading. While not my favorite in The Redemption series which has been a superior series by Sarah Castille, Strong Hold is still worth the read once you get past…well, the past.Review copy provided for a voluntary.
