This book has the feel of cut-and-paste compilation from other published sources. A relative of mine served in the 155th Airborne Anti-tank/Anti-aircraft Batallion of the 17th Airborne Division. Consequently, was thrilled to see the 155th AT/AA Battalion (which is largely overlooked in most histories) covered on page 9. Unfortunately it was identified as the "155 Anti-Aircraft Batallion." Following this misnomer, the author launches into a description of the unit's anti-tank and heavy weapons capabilities. The Index leaves a lot to be desired: In the "S" section, the 17th Airborne Division can be found followed by an incomplete list of its components. Therefore, if the reader wishes to find, for example, the 155th AT/AA Batallion, she/he has to go to the "O" section. This book does not feel "readable"....its probably a decent desk reference. The Bibliography is very "light" on the subject of bothe the 17th ABN and Operation Varsity for my tastes. It also looks "fluffed-up" with some general WW2 histories. Nevertheless, in all fairness to the author,I was able to ascertain the specific Landing Zones (LZs) where my relative's unit landed during Varsity as well as the Troop Carrier Groups involved. Despite my criticism, I'm glad I bought the book and will add it to my library of 17th Airborne literture. A final note. Reputedly the most comprehensive and best illustrated book on Operation Varsity was written a few years ago in German; and, unfortunately, has never been translated into English, It is by Johann J. Nitrowski and titled "Die Luftlandung: Das Kriegsende im Bebiet der Stadte Hamminkeln und Wesel." From what I have been able to lear about this book, it is a balanced critique of Operation Varsity from all sides...American, British, German...and contains many not-commonly-seen photographs. The Last Drop is hopefully not the last book on the subject.

Well written, thoroughly enjoyed the book. Also very informative. Learned a great deal about U.S. and U.K. joint ops.

The authors writing style is pretty boring. Frequently redundant, the chronicrnolical events are written in block like paragraphs . As an avid reader of WW II, I did appreciate the personal and anecdotal recollections of both the officers and enlisted personal.

Excellent book!

Nice historical account for the price. Glad I purchased it.

The author covers the operations in support of Montgomery's crossing of the Rhine River in late March 1944.The operations overall were very sucessful - paratroops and glider troops were landed generally close to their projected LZ/DZ, they sucessfully captured their major objectives and relief by ground forces proceded in a timely manner. The work, by necessity, covers much on the pre-operation phase: the attitudes and actions of troops preparing for the operation, the drafting of aircraft pilots to cover the lack of glider pilots, the planning of the operation, etc. There is little coverage on the action post-drop, and for the good reason that the German forces were in collapse. There was a very thing crust still holding the east bank of the Rhine across from Montgomery. The German army however had already been punctured by the Patton's and Patch's armies to the south. The ability of the depleted German forces to oppose the water-borne crossing of the Rhine was weak and these forces were able to force a crossing and establish an every expanding bridgehead rapidly. What the author does not address is the question "should have this operation been conducted"?Was Varsity a sucess? Yes. Was Varsity a needed operation that justified the operational losses as well as the losses of men and material to the anti-aircraft fire? That is much more difficult to say but note that these operations were basically over the second day. The ground forces pushed ahead without major opposition and German counter-attacks against the airborne forces had little of the power or tenacity seen in France or Holland. The men who participated, for the most part, were eager to take part in the most massive airborne operation of WWII. However from the vantage of almost 70 years later the lives lost were for scanty returns.

Very much enjoyed this book and its coverage of an operation that has received little in the way of books about it. The detailed writings about the glider operations were most enjoyable to me. What made it even more enjoyable is that I had visited the area of the drops during a visit to Germany in 2007. I highly recommend this book to those interested in airborne operations and the battles of the closing days of WWII in Europe.

This book was a wonderful description of Operation Varsity, a Battle in which my father-in-law fought and earned a bronze star and purple heart. Because he was never able to speak about his experience in this bloody operation, it is good to be able to read about it and understand what drove his behavior afterward.

Review

“Reference mixed with irreverence—that's what makes To Be or Not to Be so much fun.” —Slate“An idea that is, by most conventional literary standards, terrible, but pushed so far past terrible that it wraps around like a comet slingshotting around the sun and comes back as utterly brilliant.” —Lev Grossman, TimePraise for other work by Ryan North:“Romeo and/or Juliet is written with the finest distilled charm and genuine enthusiasm. Entertaining and extremely satisfying.” —Kate Beaton, author of Hark! A Vagrant and Step Aside, Pops“Ryan North's The Best of Dinosaur Comics: 2003-2005 A.D. had me howling with laughter and passing the book around to whomever I could lay hands on to point out particularly good strips. Dinosaur Comics is an unlikely gem of a webcomic.” —Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing"Adventure Time #10 is a spectacular jumping-on point for readers young and old. Even for non-fans, this issue is one of the most captivating comics of the year." —The Onion A.V. Club"[The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl] was freaking hilarious... it's the closest thing the Marvel universe has to a classic screwball sitcom." —Nerdist “Machine of Death is a marvelous collection, riddled with intelligence, creative reach, and a frankness that makes the best use of the central gimmick.” —Tasha Robinson, The Onion A.V. Club“This Is How You Die is a brilliantly addictive book that reads like a series of existential, death-obsessed Twilight Zone episodes. Very highly recommended.” —Seth Grahame-Smith, author of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Loved the personal stories interwoven with the overall stories of the three regiments, both put in context with the rest of the war and what other countries thought about the use of women in war. A wonderful overview!

Meticulously researched and detailed, A Thousand Sisters is about the thousand or so airwomen in the Russian Red Army that were the only combat force with women in it, during WWII. Since it was Wein's book, writer of the beautifully written Code Name Verity, I was especially excited to read this book. However, it did not live up to my expectations as an engaging book, albeit non-fiction, about the brave and legendary women of Russia.A couple of chapters in, I realized the format of the book was not entirely conducive to constant reading. The sheer bombardment of details, names and places was enough to overwhelm me. I barely kept a few names in my mind, and trudged along through the book, as it recounted the varied experiences of the women, their general childhood during the Lenin and Stalin era, and the wartime regulations that curtailed and freed them. It recounted specific experiences for a lot of women, and highlights of their individual career paths, but the problem with how Wein arranged the events by theme and not always chronology meant that the reader is frequently jumping back and forth between different women and times. It would have probably been more interesting had it focused on a few women exclusively and written in others around them, instead of just being this woman, that contingent, that force.I did like the fact that it gave a general background to their situation, and made constant comparisons to the treatment of airwomen in Western countries. Some missions were recounted, which made for exciting stories in between all the information being thrown at you. As a person who is checking it out as a starting point for research, it will probably make for a good choice; it might just bore a leisure reader like me. I tried out the audiobook early on in the book, and it was a much smoother read on audio than in print. (Which just goes to say, don't knock audiobooks!)

An engaging and sharply written story about the Soviet Night Witches of World War II. I'm not a war history fan, so battle stuff here did nothing for me, but all of the social aspects of their stories were absolutely engrossing for me. I'm thrilled this is the trim size it is, too, making it look like an adult nonfiction title or YA fiction title, so chances are teens will pick it up. Images are a nice addition, as are the side bars with additional information. Wein was the right writer for this topic, and her passion for female pilots shines through. An outstanding reference section and notes about sources, about translation, and about the weaknesses in research are themselves great reading, too.
