I bought this book hoping to find a good desk reference for cultivating psychedelic plants, as well as understanding how to guide people should they decide to take a psychedelic spiritual journey. There are three parts of this book's cover that are misleading - "cultivation," "preparation," and "Shamanic use." First of all, there is little to nothing about cultivation, more of a historical perspective on these plants, which while sometimes interesting, are not pertinent to growing these plants. Most of the plants DeKorne lists you can find in any online list, with far more information on growing them. As for preparation, as other reviewers have commented, this entire section has been removed - if you're going to take it from the book, then take it from the cover. As for "Shamanic Use," DeKorne spends a lot of time talking about HIS experiences and his understanding, but there was little here to really help guide people. Imagine someone telling you about their dreams - that's pretty much the first half of this book. I gleamed more about Shamanism from Michael Pollan's "How to Change Your Mind" than I could from this book, and Pollan was just summarizing his experience. In short, this book may have been good in early revisions, but all it is now is just someone recounting their experiences with psychedelic compounds, which while an interesting read (well, it wasn't for me) is not that helpful for anyone interested in Shamanism.
I bought the new psychedelic shamanism, updated edition and was horrified to find the chapter "Extraction Procedures" was nearly entirely deleted and contained no valuable information. I already knew that Mr. DeKorne was the initiator of the Entheogen Review and I had assumed from that affiliation he would have a treasure trove of information accumulated regarding extraction procedures. The rest of the book is quite vividly entertaining and well written in the stylistic tone of a person who obviously knows about "the imaginal realm" but lacks scientific scrutiny and attention to detail.IF YOU ARE GOING TO COMPLETELY EDIT A CHAPTER AND LEAVE IT BARREN OF INFORMATION, YOU SHOULD REMOVE IT ALTOGETHER.Other than the fact that the updated addendums are quite unprofessional, the rest of the book is colorfully written and provides a beautiful backdrop for those interested in shamanic practice throughout history. There are alot of interesting reports of various journeys and a well educated look into psychedelic origins.
Unusual, intriguing & beautifully descriptive. DeKorne details amazing personal experiences- some good, some bad. It's humorous at times & had me laughing out loud as he decribed quirky abstract thoughts we all have (but usually don't admit). Very intelligently written & I cannot say it's an easy read, but it's thought provoking & well worth the effort. This man is not a brain damaged, babbling idiot whose writing wild & mindless tales of his 'party life' - quite the opposite. These accounts are almost raw with honesty. It would be easy to determine these stories are sensationalised or assume he was 'just high or having a flash back' - but I believe him. In my life, I've experienced many things not easily explained, yet I stand beside them as my truths. Enlightenment is a life force of it's own & follows a different set of rules. I'm comforted to read these magical experiences described by a man so rational, intelligent & very much enlightened. I would love to meet this Shaman.
I first learned about the author and then later this specific book while reading, Breaking Open The Head by Daniel Pinchbeck. Personally, I have over a decade of experience working with visionary plants and am always looking for more information regarding techniques and rituals and this book has some interesting insights into both. Growing up in the western culture visionary plants and "indian" culture is regarded as savage or primitive to this very day. And, most anthropological studies are conducted with a cold supremacy and utterly fail to connect with and explore the belief system with an open and receptive mindset. Psychedelic Shamanism is an honest effort by a western "shaman" who wants to understand visionary plants on their own terms using whatever technique is available. It is great resource for those who have aspirations to participate in the infinite while they are incarnate physical beings on this 3D world.
There are so many valuable parts of this book -- from his experiences to the analysis of all the different psychadelics in a shamanistic view, to the science of the fourth dimension. I'm impressed by this book and have several parts highlighted. I'm going to read it again and check out his other stuff too.

This is a remarkable book. Practical matters of extracting entheogens from plants aside, DeKorne is brilliant when he pulls back and surveys the (psychedelic) waterfront with clear thinking and concise writing, a rare commodity in this arena. He goes deep into the collective unconscious, to use the Jungian term, yet retains his sound judgment and sense of proportion in describing a long, strange journey of self awareness. This alone is worth the price of admission, as it is no simple process.
