Fun and digestable history of a great town.
This book is an insult to Ann Arbor.

Picked this book up on a lark during a trip to Literati in downtown Ann Arbor a few weeks ago. It was affordable, had some cool art of familiar landmarks and locations on the cover, and it was autographed, so I pulled the trigger.To be completely honest, the subheading, "An extremely serious history book" had me a little worried at the outset. I prepared myself for something that might be too goofy or overly cheeky for its own good. Instead, Retyi actually plays it pretty straight and his engaging, conversational tone makes for an immersive and easy read.The Book of Ann Arbor is broken down into 40 or so short chapters, each covering an interesting story or piece of history ranging from the city's birth (first chapter) to the Dexter Swamp Gas situation to a rundown on the city's most prominent train crashes. As a (relatively) young fellow who never knew a pre-90's Ann Arbor, I was compelled by a lot of the assorted insights. In addition, Retyi's habit of not only listing specific addresses of particular locations but also referencing what businesses reside at these locales today was very helpful. For instance, I was intrigued to learn that Iggy Pop used to work at Discount Records, which now stands as the Potbelly on the corner of State and Liberty.Some of my favorite chapters: Riot at the Star Theatre, Henry Ford's Strong Right Fist (re: Harry Bennett and his castle off Geddes), The Suicide Submarine Parade,The Embassy Hotel, Ann Arbor Cages Public Animal #1 (a GG Allin story), The Dictator Comes to Town, Dam Arbor, Skyscrapers, and The Bling Pig.If you insist on ingesting your history through laborious anthologies and extensive technical speak, you won't be getting a lot of that here. But if you're looking for some interesting and frequently entertaining tales regarding the city of Ann Arbor, this book is a worthy acquisition.
