I just finished reading Breaking In from cover to cover, and have gone through like three highlighters in the process. I think to say that it is the best book any advertising student could ever read to prepare them for building their portfolio is a severe understatement. I'm redoing my whole portfolio from scratch because of the book, and for good reasons: the vast amount of insider information contained in this book is astonishing.I especially like the layout because [for the most part] William asks the same set of questions for everyone, so soon you'll see a pattern of what most of them are looking for. This will help you tailor your book to be the best it can be and have the greatest impact possible. Remember, it's your book, not anyone else's, so you, above all people, have to be ecstatic about it. But this book will be your greatest tool in terms of actually "Breaking In". If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would.

This book first caught my interest after I read a few interviews on its official site. I then purchased the book not really knowing how much it would truly help. A simple review cannot explain the value of this book. I would read between three to five interviews a day, take notes, and ponder on what I read. Then I did my best to apply it to me. I ended up learning a lot about the industry and eventually landed a job within my three months of reading.This book has done more for me than my schooling and work experience combined. I believe it's partly because the insights shared are from highly successful and intelligent people in advertising. This book can help you get to where you want to be regardless of where you're at now.

One of the most valuable books I've ever purchased. I'm a young writer trying to build a portfolio from home and the amount of advice given in this book is priceless. I'd pay $100 for this book knowing the quality of information it contains and in such abundance. Over 100 interviews with the people that you want to work for. If you're an advertising student or someone trying to break into this industry on their own, this book is a MUST HAVE.

Good book. Worthwhile - but trust me, take the plunge and go to a portfolio school. It's a people business and the connections you make are almost as important as your abilities.

I got more useful advice from this book than from two years of ad school. This is an amazing resource for students, juniors or anyone considering advertising as a career.

This is a brilliant idea. Most of these portfolio books are all the same: do a visual solution campaign, do a headline campaign, 5-7 print campaigns of 3 ads, etc, etc. Those books serve a purpose but (1) they are getting really dated as the industry changes faster and faster and (2) they are a one-size-fits-all approach. The industry isn't like that. What they look for at CP+B is going to be very different from McCann. Even within agencies, different people have different opinions. Anyway, this is a totally different format. It's just interviews with creative directors, from Dan Wieden and David Droga level down to senior creatives who would probably see your book before it gets to a CD. Also some recruiters (who are important players in the game) and a couple ad school directors. The questions/topics are pretty consistent: what do you look for in a student portfolio? How important is finish? Can sketches be enough? Long copy? Should you show non-advertising stuff and what kind of stuff works? How to get in touch with the CDs you want to work for, how to interview, job-hunting strategies...etc. It's pretty interesting to see how one creative director has a completely different opinion from another on certain questions. This is a great book for an ad student or someone making their first book. I actually think anyone in the industry would find this really interesting, even if they have a great job. It also gives you good insight into how these people think and what the industry is like, which might be great for someone who just wants to figure out if advertising is for them. However, if you have no experience and have taken no ad classes don't expect this book to teach you how to make an ad. This book is valuable for people who are a little more advanced than that. If you really want nuts and bolts basics about how to come up with concepts, etc. go with "Hey Whipple Squeeze This" by Luke Sullivan or "The Advertising Concept Book" by Pete Barry. Then read this. And you'll probably have to take some classes or go to ad school too. It's getting harder and harder to get into advertising as a creative.

Wow! Spencer gives us a very thorough look at advertising and what it takes to get in.Technology is leading advertising through a step-change, and it's an exciting time to break in. Spencer provides a detailed scan of portfolios and what Creative Directors (the people who hire you) are looking for. Spencer's interviews give abundant practical advice on job-hunting, interviewing, what not to do, etc. The interview style is a great strength of this book, because the information is unfiltered and remains free from a framework imposed by someone else. Spencer brings us to the experts with the feeling that nothing is lost in translation. While a terrific book for folks considering advertising as their main gig, the book's potential is much broader. With changes in advertising impacting so much of our world right now, anyone can benefit from understanding what the leaders of the field are thinking, and how they are poised to change with the changing technological tides.

About the Author

Dave, Dorothy, and Ben are father, daughter, and son in the famous juggling Finnigan family. She has personally taught thousands of children and adults to juggle in her travels. She was also the winner of the Most Promising Woman Award from the IJA in 1997 and in Montreal in 2000 was the first female ever to receive a medal in the IJA junior competition.Ben Finnigan, age 12, is also an up-and-coming star in the world of juggling. Ben claims to be as good a juggle at 12 as his father was at 36, or is at 59. who has grown into a lovely young lady. fact is folks, a juggling book isn't realistic, as you need to see juggling to mimic and learn. though when I got this I was terrible, so it was helpful for a little while. truthfully, if you can, videos and dvds (dvds for loop factor) is the way to go so you can see it, SEE IT, over and over. a book forces you to visualize, whereas when you start juggling you just want to SEE IT, so you can mimic and learn, then get the form down and all that stuff, even the simple stuff like a 3 ball cascade/reverse, 4 ball fountain, you need to see these over and over. but the humor in the book is good, and the pictures are good, so that's why the 5 star, and the daughter...........sorry I dazed for a second there, for a true beginner (less than 3 months), it's worth it.

I FOUND JUGGLING FROM START TO STAR TO BE VERY EASY TO FOLLOW AND IT HELPED ME QUITE A BIT WITH ALL MY JUGGLING. IT IS A BOOK I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMEND TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN JUGGLING.

The information in this book is great. I just expected more of an organized layout for the 52 weeks of acupressure. I've learned a lot but just expected it to be organized in a way that gives you weekly information or layout was different. Otherwise very powerful stuff that actually works. I've been feeling amazing doing the techniques!!!! I actually do the techniques morning and night. Thanks to the author if you read this!!!!

Kirkwood's books are interesting and helpful in getting an understanding of how he sees five element theory. His explanations are clear and make sense though they seem to differ some in how others explain things. This isn't just a device to determine what your five element profile is but more of an overall picture of the elements working in nature, the seasons and all over the place. Including within us. He's an entertaining writer who has spent some time thinking about this stuff and would likely give some pretty good lectures. I think I am a little smarter on this subject after reading his two books,

This can be a journey of learning through the year, or you can go directly to the element most needed. Very useful in deepening your practitioner awareness of the nuances.

I just received this book and it came at the perfect time. I am a qigong teacher and in a couple of days I am offering a special class on self-tapping and the Points. I am supplementing my notes with information from Kirkwood's book. This was what I had in mind when I decided to teach this class. I love the in-depth discussions that he has on the points. Always refreshing to see another person's view on things. It is not just good for the info on the points he is discussing but shows where these points are on the body, with photos. It is great for qigong practitioners so they can know which meridians/points are stimulated by all the qigong exercises. I may just add it into my required readings for my qigong certification students.

I enjoyed reading this very precise book. It has also an element of sensitivity that I appreciated very much. Highly recommended

Grade 2-4-This seventh series entry retells the story in rhymed couplets with illustrations by the author's students, ages 7 to 12. The style is lively and interesting, and some of the phrasing is humorous: "Meanwhile, King Claudius was still uptight./The cause of Hamlet's madness had not come to light." The fact that stage directions and speakers' names are included within the verses poses some difficulty when acting out the play. A very perceptive narrator would be needed to make it all come out just right. Boxed insets of children's rewritten segments of the play as letters or diary entries offer interesting insights into their perception of the characters. Since the colorful drawings represent the characters in a wide variety of styles, they lack a sense of unity. Activities are presented at the end of the book to extend the experience. This is a good source of ideas for teachers who want to use Shakespeare in their elementary classrooms. My 10-year-old son reluctantly read Hamlet for Kids with me for one of his weekly writing assignments. He griped about it, but I think he actually enjoyed reading it. He wanted to see part of Branagh's Hamlet movie with me later, and even stuck around while I found several key parts that I had already passed.The rhyming is so clever, and perfectly tells the story! It is very understandable for younger students, but uses excellent vocabulary words. I love the notes written by the students that are from the point of view of the character. They seemed to drive home what was really going on in case my son hadn't completely understood it when reading the rhyming text.I plan to read another one with him in 2 months or so! (I plan to read ALL of them myself!)

Not as well laid out as I like. Very busy pages. Wanted something my kiddos could read and understand on their own. Will keep looking.

I used this to prepare my 9 year old son to see his first Shakespeare play (Simulcast Hamlet with Benedict Cumberbatch). We read it 2-3 times and it was a WONDERFUL preparation for the real play. He followed the play perfectly and loved it. It really helped instill a love for the Bard. I highly recommend it! Follow up reading it with words from the real play and then a trip to the theatre.

It's true, these books gave my son a lifelong love of Shakespeare! They are wonderufl for adults too.. looking to understand and have fun with the main message in each passage. They really deserve a high spot in the literary world.

Love it!!! This helps make this story so reachable for kids, even my 3 yr old loves the sing song rhyming. The illustrations are inspiring for my guys to show them, they too can draw. Can't praise this book enough and I'm excited to collect her other books.

Willem Marx grew up in the UK, studied Classics at Oxford University, before graduating from New York University with an MA in Journalism. There he studied Geography, Political Science and Journalism. His photographic work in Balochistan won the Anthropographia Honorary Mention and has been exhibited at the New York Photo Festival, the Forum for Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland, at the Gijon Photojournalism Festival in Spain and in Paris. Marx is a very talented reporter: the opening anecdote of being on the run from inept Pakistani spies in a dangerous city was worthy of John LeCarre, and his profiles of people, politics, and landscape are both beautiful and revelatory. Wattrelot's pictures can speak for themselves. This book deserves more attention.

This is an amazing book about this country. The Photos are fantastic and truly show the wonderous nature of that part of the world.

I purchased this thinking it would make an interesting coffee table book, but knowing very little about Balochistan (even though it comprises almost half of Pakistan) or the conflict between the Government of Pakistan and the Baloch ethno-nationalist rebels. After sitting in its plastic for close to a week, I figured I'd flip a few pages...and ended up not being able to put it down until I had read the book cover to cover. With a humanized narrative, the author takes you through a series of encounters that range from a struggling fisherman to young, idealistic activists to rebels and government agents. These encounters are artfully used to explain the region's political, ethnic and economic history, and to provide context for the area's current disorder. It's a fascinating read and also quite the adventure story. Great pictures as well but don't mistake this for your typical coffee table book like I did.
