And since we are currently planning an open house for women who are interested in joining our club, this short read gave great insight on how to execute a top notch event. First thing I liked was the cover. This is a pretty little pocket book. The content inside is organized, to the point, and includes sample forms, outlines and helpful tips for not only planning literary events, but provides leadership tools for managing social activities such as book clubs.I liked the examples from previous mistakes included as a guide to prevent repeated faults. I was really inspired by the efforts put in to keeping the book club interesting and readers engaged as well. The secret pals was just one of the many great examples that sounded not only unique, but like a lot of fun. The community outreach activities suggested, along with Sharon’s motivation for staying committed to the book club is truly what seals the overall makings of a commendable resource guide perfect for authors, literary planners, book bloggers and anyone who supports literature. Commendable!

First, let me say that this book may be a bit smaller than you think it is. I was expecting a larger coffee table style book, and it is smaller. However, it made up for this in content. It explains the story of Christmas, along with an explanation for where "XMas" first came from, which as you will read does not take the Christ out of Christmas. I appreciated the history of all the different historical and mythical figures that eventually turned into the Santa Claus that we all know in North America. That was just the first few chapters! The rest of the book takes us into different cultures to see how they celebrate the Holiday Season and their unique traditions that are passed down throughout generations. Overall, it is a very informative book, and a nice on to keep on the table to read a chapter or two when you feel like it.

Rick Steves' new edition of his classic European Christmas book will be a hit with his fans and an eye-opener for those not familiar with his work. It takes the reader on a journey across Europe to reveal the food, decorations, songs, and celebrations of its many countries. The book is lavishly and beautifully illustrated and includes all of the European Christmas traditions from his earlier work, both the book and the PBS special. Also included are recipes and quirky tidbits such as Santa Claus' family tree--for real ! I gave three copies to people unfamiliar with Rick's fine work and all were amazed and delighted. This book will make a wonderful gift and would be a fine addition to your family's own Christmas traditions.

I loved reading Rick Steves' European Christmas. It was so interesting to read how people in Europe celebrate the holidays and the traditions of each of the countries that Rick Steves' visited. I have seen the dvd many times throughout the years, but it was nice to just read the stories and the book included a lot of traditional holiday recipes. I enjoyed it very much.

I loved the one book I received, and the folks I gave it to on Christmas loved it too!However, the second book I ordered never arrived in time for Christmas. And as I'm just now back from travels and checking Amazon, I see why: it was instead sent to a hotel in Chicago. :-(I hope they liked it. I wish it had come to me though! Not sure what happened!

A nice companion to the DVD of the same title. Full of interesting facts on how Christmas is celebrated (or not celebrated, i.e. Paris) around europe.

In my quest to find proper study tools for Bible Study, I was really fortunate to hear about this volume. One of the best features of this work is its claim that it definitely lives up to: it defines words that (unfortunately by the mass of professing Christendom that takes up "issue" with the beloved King James Bible) are claimed to be "archaic", "obsolete" and the worst "should be removed". In its third edition, this book not only defines these so-called "archaic" words, but also as a bonus demonstrates that the vast majority of these words that are looked down upon by the masses are no more archaic than news publications and magazines from the last about 25 years or so. It also shows that the most used excuses for not using the KJB anymore "its to hard to understand" "we don't talk like that anymore" and "these (the new versions) are so much easier to understand" if taken seriously and searched out have no foundation either. Many of the new versions also use what could be considered as "difficult words" with some replacing simple one or two syllable words in certain spots of the KJB with an even harder word ! I would recommend this work to all believers. Ultimately however, understanding the Bible is not a head issue its a heart issue. Do you come to the Bible standing in Judgement of the word of God or meekly at the feet of Jesus ?“For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.” (1 Thessalonians 2:13)

This is an excellent reference for Sunday School teachers and Bible students alike. It has an index in the back of the book for easy location of words. I read from the King James Bible and I don't use this reference book now as much as I used to because I've learned the meaning of KJV words pretty quickly since using this as a source guide. But it's handy to have in your personal library if you're unable to figure out a word or passage.

Wanted this for years. Finally got it. I enjoy knowing kjv archaic words instead of guessing at them. Simply finding an archaic old english word in modern magazine or newspaper doesn't mean its used very often or understood so unless theres a way of looking the 1611 meaning up, the word is obscure.

Hardback wonderful condition and subject was already known so happy to get this book

On the day after receiving this book I was able to use it twice. It happened that I ran into the words "trow" and "youward" in my AV reading. Both times I reached for this book and easily found the word, its meaning, its usage in the AV, and how other translations have handled these words. I couldn't be more pleased. It is now on my shelf in easy reach when I do my daily reading of the AV.The book itself is bound well, opens easily and lies flat for comfortable reading. The print is dark, the paper thick enough so there's no bleedthrough from the next page. The print is also large enough for readers of all ages. In other words, the author/publisher has taken efforts to design the book so that the reader can actually use it with comfort.I am extremely pleased and recommend it for anyone studying, contemplating, or just perusing the King James Version.

Great book. I've been reading front to back, one word at a time. Meanings are explained clearly and contrasts are shown that expose the modern bungles for what they are. The explanations under each word is like a devotional read unto itself.

Everyone who is a woman, married to a woman, works with women, or has a female as a child, should read this book. It also has the most useful information I could find on Peri and Post menopause. We use it in all of our pre- marital classes. Very eye opening and helps all understand the great mystery of why we women are so complex. It tracks development of the brain and the interplay of harmones effect on our thinking, acting, and their physical expression through all the stages of life. AMAZING! I do not know the author, but I can tell you this, Louann is has done a great service to the human population in the compling and mastering the research, and then handing it on to us. She knows her field!

I am 50 pages into this book, and I cannot finish it.This book makes me hate my own gender, and, chapter after chapter, says that all women's bad behavior is a result of their hormones and "it's just how we're wired." Furthermore, it only discusses the stereotypical female traits. (Boy crazy, obsessed about our looks, and not as good at math).I was so looking forward to reading a book about the female brain and it's differences from the male brain, but this is a pigeon-holing cop-out.

I read both The male brain and female brain focusing mostly on the "mature brain" chapters. Great information and I learned so much. I believe however that in The Female Brain there was more bias towards women. At times it read like a womens magazine article to uplift women. Womens suffrage in the past is acknowledged by everyone but men dying in wars to save nations, working hard labor and dying young also needs to be considered. I wonder if today's women erratic behavior isn't more social change than hormonal. Leaving your husband for no reason at 60 is wrong no matter your hormonal change.

This book was a revelation and presents compelling information every woman (and man) should know. It is well-written for the non-clinical person and made a liar out of me, since I used to insist my mood did not vary at different points in either my life or menstrual cycle. The content should probably be required reading at some point in a woman's life. It is both reassuring and unsettling.

I learned so much about the physiological aspect of the aging process - the entire lifespan - of women. I would recommend this to every woman I know and men too. This book would be especially helpful for women who are headed into menopause/post menopause, to get an idea of what to expect.

I read this book years ago and still remember some of the insights I learned from it. I bought and read the sequel "The Male Brain" and found that book equally informative about people's behaviors. I heard the author interviewed on various NPR programs, including Terry Gross' "Fresh Air" and my local public radio station KQED's program "Forum". This book and its "companion" "The Male Brain" should be delightful reading for parents, their teenage and adult kids and college freshmen, who must navigate life's challenges on their own as newly minted, liberated adults in the fast-moving, evolving environments in colleges (and universities), especially if they live on-campus or away from home (off-campus housing). These books can be used as "self-help" books are budding adults, whether they are young men, young women or young couples. Long-term couples and their parents can benefit hugely from reading this book and its companion.

One of the best books I've read on the difference between men and women.Not only describes what goes on in a female's brain but also in the male brain from conception thru death.EVERY adolescent girl OR boy should be required to read this by the time they get out of high school!!Read this when I was 72. Wish I could have read it when I was 18. Unfortunately Brizendine didn't get around to writing it until I was 63.

Did the positive reviewers read this book!? First off, it's not Christmasy (nothing says seasonal joy like a door to door carpet salesman, magic, and nothing to do with - you know - Christmas), and second, it flat out doesn't make sense. We thought we were missing several pages but I see from the comments of the negative reviews that we're not alone. Skip this entry in the Bemelmans oeuvre ...

My kids and I love the Madeline books and have several. This one I thought would be a terrific addition to the collection and perfect for Christmas. Unfortunately, it does not even come close to the older, "authentic" Madeline stories. I understand the artwork being more modern; and the pictures were bright and interesting. But the story itself was substandard. It was short, and felt like major pieces of the story were missing. As an example- Madeline meets a rug merchant and buys small carpets for all 12 girls. The merchant is also a magician and the carpets are magic flying carpets. On the next page, the girls ride the carpets home for Christmas. Then the page after that is Miss Clavel clapping her hands and bringing them back to school. The most interesting thing in the whole story was glossed over in one page! It could have been a fascinating, magical story but the new author completely missed the mark on this one.

Not so much about Christmas as I would like. Still love Madeline though!

Kind of a disappointing addition for fans of the original. It combines appropriated lines of a famous Christmas poem with an absurd and unsatisfying plot and ending. Our kid doesn't ask for it by name.

Very strange book, not at all cute and sweet like the original Madeline.

I love the first Madeline book, but this one was just irritating.The choppy grammar makes it very difficult to read aloud (even silently). My kids were not impressed with this one. Love Madeline though...

Every year the sweet grandchild gets Christmas pajamas and a Christmas book. This is still a wonderful classic that is timeless. The illustrations are huge in the huge book, and who just doesn't still love Madeline? This is the book for this Christmastime.
