Has this guy ever made a game? Most of it is full of nonsense about how the author would improve D&D and very little about programming or how to structure data in an rpg. Long descriptions of how the author's variant of D&D is more "realistic" (something crazy to consider when creating any rpg much less a crpg) and totally improved over D&D and issues relevant to making a game are glossed over. Avoid.

One can really feel that the author cares and is passionate about the RPG theme, so this is definitely a great book for rpg lovers. The title "RPG Programming USING XNA Game studio 3.0" is not "XNA Game studio 3.0 - RPG style!" for a good reason.This book is NOT about setting up your 2D camera and drawing Rectangle()s. This can be clearly deduced from the page 191 where the author STARTS to implement the graphical part of the game: "The reason I've held off with graphics is partly because I'm of the opinion that graphics are one of the least important parts of an RPG."The first almost 200 pages focus completely on building the RPG architecture for the game, having NOTHING to do with XNA. They are just C# classes, data types etc, structured in a well thought out and organized fashion.The reason I am rating this 4/5 is because I think it shows an important concept of separating logic from graphics. There are some really nice tricks of how to do this throughout the book.Unfortunately, the book suffers from very little detail in this respect. A lot of time is spent on describing the usual RPG terminology (like dexterity and strength) while some of the more fun XNA related bits (using sprite-batches and other XNA resources outside of the Game-class environment, making use of xna component system, reasons for structuring your project in a certain manner) are glossed over and you are directed towards code.While reading the book I felt as if any one chapter after page 200 could be expanded into a book of it's own (which I certainly hope the author does, and which I would be glad to read!). Format similar to that of "XNA 3.0 Game Programming Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach" would suit perfectly the authors succinct writing style.Another downside is that a lot of the code fails to compile with game studio 3.1. While it is possible to fish out and replace references with new and updated 3.1 dlls, I feel as if the author should have made an effort into updating the source code for 3.1 release.In conclusion, if you are an aspiring game developer, and you've poked around the XNA thing for at least a couple of month, and want to start on a solid RPG game - this book is for you. It will teach you EVERYTHING you ever wandered about how rpgs are made.

A great book for an RPG game approach. A lot of new and advanced concepts here. The book was informative, full of the necessary creativity and original thinking that a good game requires. I feel if someone is interested in making an RPG game this could work as a nice template, the result would definitely be a solid RPG.

I really enjoyed this book. If you are looking to develop a object model for a RPG look no further. If you are looking for something to tell you about how to develop a graphic engine or how to make your game multi player you will find this book disappointing.

This is the third book on RPG development I've bought. While most books assume the reader is an absolute beginner, this one is nice in that it assumes the reader has a basic knowledge of C# and XNA. It's the code that starts the problem though. The book randomly jumps from codebit to codebit, pointing out details of a codebase that you aren't given and lacking the full details to transcribe it from the book. The code samples given are disjointed, with whole sections included that aren't talked about but without enough code to compile. The book has some value in demonstrating technique, but don't expect to make an RPG with this.

It's not a beginner's book by any stretch of the imagination, but it does cover a lot of very key points dealing with structuring a role-playing game.Use this book as a reference only and not as a complete guide to role-playing development.In all I would recommend this book as a must have for those individuals who already create games, but want to break into the role-playing genre.

This book shows a few things, but actually it doesn't put anything together. So it never actually go into anything hard that the developer doesn't know. Studying the RPG starter kit from the XNA creator site is much more valuable. Also, the code doesn't work. It crashes or won't build. Big waste of time.

He also kept in his life many people that allowed him to destroy himself but also had many friends who were helpless to help him because he often kept them at arms length. It was understandable that some people opted out of his life because of his actions. In spite of the love they felt, his very actions eventually alienated them and not everyone wants to watch a train wreck.At the same time, he could be charming and appear so giving yet be quite egocentric and selfish. Was it possible that the looks, charm, and talent may have given the impression of a deeper internal self? For someone with so many insights into others, he had little knowledge of self or sense of self. That may have come from a childhood cut off from others in an insular environment where one was bound to secrecy. This is most likely what made impossible for him to form any relationship that would have given him the intimacy and family structure he craved and obviously needed.There were parallels between his choices in doctors that fed his addictions or fed into his psychological issues and what happened with Michael Jackson, Marilyn Monroe, and Judy Garland. How these practitioners were able to keep licenses was amazing. Like seasoned con artists, they have a knack for finding and latching on to the damaged members of the celebrity cult. Clift's choices to remain in treatment and follow their advice in the face of advice from more competent doctors and therapists ensured his self destruction.He did leave us with some memorable performances on film, Robert E Lee Prewitt, George Eastman, Noah Ackerman, Freud, and Rudolph Peterson. It is sad that he was unable to get his life and career on track to fulfill the promise that these performances reveal. When seeing them, it makes one wish for more and wonder what one missed by the life cut short.Ms. Bosworth's book is revealing without being sordid. As a former actress, her insight helped understanding this complex and self destructive artist.

The book is extremely well researched and well written and holds the reader's interest to the very end. It very well describes the character of Montogmery Clift and what an intense, complicated and interesting person he was. One realizes that his face which was framed by those incredible eyebrows and those piercing eyes was the true expression of a very sensitive and fragile person who analyzed every detail of his life and never,ever compromised on what he believed in. He paid a big price in life for his integrity and straight forward attitude which found comfort in drugs and alcohol, the two items that eventually killed him at a much too young age. The Montgomery Clift who plays taps at the funeral of Frank Sinatra,\with tears running down his cheeks was not the Montgomery Clift playing a role but the real Montgomery Clift who found life so difficult and frustrating.I think anyone who reads this book and is a movie fan will be well rewarded not only about learning about M.C. but also getting an insight into the difficult and lonely life of the world of entertainment.Ironically and sadly, the image of M.C. who covered the screen in such great proportions is today a little figure simply buried in a Quaker cemetery in Brooklyn, a place where many great people were born and dreamt only of leaving.

In Patrica Bosworth, Clift has found a sympathetic and highly competent biographer. The story she has to tell is a tragic and heartbreakingly familiar one: a talented actor haunted by his homosexuality and driven to self destruction. Like Marilyn Momroe with whom he was friends if not soul mates. What we're left with are a dozen superlative performances too many to list. And one painful anomaly. On "Suddenly, Last Summer" -- the weirdest movie of the fifties -- he plays a brilliant brain surgeon but you can see his hands shaking. He was tormented on the set of "Freud" by John Huston and by Joseph L. Mankiewicz on "Suddenly." Katharine Hepburn spit in Mankiewicz's face for the way he treated Monty Check out the great performances in "Red River," "From Here to Eternity." Miss Lonley Hearts," "The Hereis," A Place in the Sun," and "The Search."

Author's voice is nearly non-existent, which makes for dry reading. By the final third, it reads more like a laundry list of Clift's transgressions and debauchery. By the end, the star remains at arms length...which I guess is how he might have wanted it. An interesting tale...just not told very well.

I always enjoyed a movie starring Montgomery Cliff. But the story of his life was very depressing. The author did a fantastic job of finding all the friends he made and frequently abused. The one person that was definitely not a friend to Monty was his psychiatrist. He definitely contributed to a lot of his problems and kept him from getting the care he needed.

I am happy ☺ that this book is now available on Kindle since I read this over 30 years ago and remembered how impressed I was with the author 's style and research. You will feel as if you know Montgomery 's soul and, even though he's a giant mess with complex problems, you will sympathize with all his struggles, including drug abuse, homosexuality, and years of unemployment. His hidden life is a tragedy because at the time there was no Betty Ford center, gay rights, or effective medications that could prevent his depression. Clift is one of the best American actors of all time. I just wish he could have enjoyed the ride.

I'm unsure why there is such a negative review on here for this text. As an educator myself, I've used the book with students and they've also had a positive result.

I have to give the book one star, because the Amazon review system needs a star. This book/web/video product is the worst educational product I have encountered. As a totally unbiased former educator, I can safely say this. This product is poorly written, conceived, and delivered. Even the simplest matter of referring to available online practice files is a mess. Don't buy this. Adobe put its name to this product. Shame.
