This author has written a series of writing guides, and none of them stand alone without the others, but this is the book that gave me the freshest and most useful insights. If you aren't familiar with the ideas presented in this book, it will change how you look at any kind of narrative work and give you new descriptive and analytical tools.There are some simple, but paradigm shifting ideas here, and they are explained with clear examples that are easy to understand. If you read this and absorb the ideas in it, you will gain a powerful tool for analysing the quality of any work. Having read this, I was able to see problems with many of my own works that I had only vaguely intuited before.It presents a language you can use to explain to others and yourself why a certain story is problematic, or good. Most writers can feel these things intuitively, but without the well-defined concepts the author presents, it can be difficult to explain certain kinds of problems or good points in a story.This book gives you tools that make it easier to decide if a scene is right or wrong, or should be kept or removed; it lets you understand why a scene is weak, and so you have a head-start of fixing it. It was definitely worth the price of admission.
I have a rule. I only read screenwriting books while writing a screenplay and applying the ideas to the work at hand. With that in mind, this book is amongst my top 3 screenwriting books. It will be of no use to you if you read it dry - without having a live project to apply it to step by step. But if you read it and apply it as you go along, you will unlock the power of his ideas. Cautionary note: you need to be familiar with most of his other writings. I've read them all in-depth. This will do two things for you. 1. It will help you understand his cross-referencing. 2. It will help you discern what content you can safely skip. This is beacuse he gives numerous examples in his writing. But if you delve deep into each of them every time you read this book, it will take you away from your writing. Use it as a reference book. Dip in and out as you go along. And download the handy checklist at the end of the book. I recreated it in Excel and use it to keep track of progress using metrics (at this stage of writing, word count isn't a metric that can be used because you're not churning out words yet).
I have learnt a lot from this book. The 5 Story Compass Points are: 1. Plot 2. Protagonist 3. Genre 4. Tone and 5. Theme. Messing up any one of these areas will greatly affect the quality of your story. The author takes us by the hand and walks us through each individually in a way that over delivers on what she promises.For example, a few of the the things I learnt is:1. How to identify a plot identity crisis. That is when you have more than one plot is in a story and 9 out of 10 times you might not realize you have done this and it will make your story messy.2. How to make sure your readers identify with the right character. Have you ever read a story in which a supporting character is miles more interesting that the protagonist? You might not realize how boring your protagonist is until you use the evaluations provided in this book.3. How to market your story. After all you are trying to sell your book.This is only the tip of the iceberg in what you will get from this book. I think it is an absolute gold for any writer.
I have other books by H.R. D'Costa. SOLID STORY COMPASS has disappointed me. It's not because it isn't clear, not at all.However, the author "explains" what he's going to write, instead of getting to the topic. The little I managed to read, however, was informative and made sense. I wish I could've finished this book, as somewhere in its covers there are gems waiting to be discovered.
