About the Author

Charles Bukowski is one of America’s best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. This is the first collection of poetry I bought from the man, the legend, the Bukowski. It's evident in this book that pain breeds art. I took solace in his words, as in the time my relationships were in turmoil. I'd advise people to start off here if you're a fan of the man's writing.

If you only read one Bukowski book, or you are looking to explore his writing, this is it. He is at is best here, from front to back. The only book of poetry that I re-read every year or two.

If you love Buk' then you'll love this book as well. I am not sure how he's able to keep me engaged with the same stories, the same articles, the same fly on the wall look at his dysfunctional life - much of which I disagree with - yet, Bukowski does it. Maybe it's his authenticity I find refreshing? The short story / article / poesy (and he calls it) format helps, not too long, not too short, just like the three bears and Goldilocks - just right.Anyway, love reading Buk' - wish he were still around writing today.

Ok, alcohol, hookers, a horse track and a bitter old man are the ingredients to some great prose. This collection is a literary masterpiece if you are willing to see it.I compare it to finding a beautiful picture of the Virgin Mary ... at the bottom of a dumpster. It is truly beautiful if you can look past the garbage.

I'm beginning to think there's something wrong with me. I have read so many books that people say "You either love it or hate it," yet I feel indifferent (or I slightly like or dislike it). Bukowski is the first writer I've seen described that way, and for a long time, I agreed. I agreed because I despised his poetry and wanted nothing to do with it.However, I decided to give it another chance, just to solidify my opinion. It didn't hurt that the Kindle edition of Love is a Dog From Hell was on sale for a buck or two a while back. So, I bought it and never touched it until a few days ago when I was searching through all my owned books for some poetry to read.Now that I've actually read an entire collection of his poetry, I think I like Bukowski. I don't love his writing and he isn't even on my list of my top ten favorite poets, but I don't hate it, either.I won't claim to "get" his poetry because there's no way of knowing if I do or do not. I hate analyzing literature and poetry, trying to pick out what the writer was "really trying to say" like we had to do for high school and college English classes. I will say that I enjoyed most of it, which surprises me. I'm fonder of more traditional poetry, usually. That's probably why I hated the first Bukowski poems I was exposed to. It wasn't the subject matter (which seems to be an issue for some people), but I still feel conflicted about his style. I don't hate it, but I can't really say I like it.If you've never read Bukowski, give him a shot. Maybe you'll love his style, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll hate it. But, you won't know until you try reading it. If you're like me, maybe you'll hate it at first, then later decide it isn't so bad.

It never fails to amaze me how prolific Bukowski was - and how he cuts to the heart of it. No pretense. No lack of authenticity. That being said, I didnâ€™t love every poem, but I am a huge fan of Bukowskiâ€™s writing and will continue to read and collect his works.

Bukowski was ahead of his time, or perhaps we have always had reason to see the glass half empty. Which ever, he had the ability to capture the dark side of life and in doing so, force light upon it. I liken it to tearing down a house to put light and heat into a dank and dark basement, forgetting dehumidifiers, larger windows and heat ducts. Get to the heart of the problem. He inspires in his own his battle, if it can be called a battle, with the obsessions that claim many of us.

Bukowski is an amazing poet. Sure, he was a womanizer, gambled, and drank too much but still brilliant. This is one of my favorite collections by him and it's something I go back to read frequently.

I'm just starting to get into Geocaching and while I know how to use a handheld GPS, I knew nothing else about geocaching and felt a little overwhelmed trying to figure out all the lingo at geocaching.com. This book really showed me all the steps I was missing and helped me to not feel lost. It obviously can't help you learn the 6th sense that comes in handy when trying to figure out where the cache could be hidden in a given location, but it does explain the lingo, the acryonms and helps you decipher which caches are the best for beginners to find and gain experience.It also has great info about hiding caches, what types of containers to use, what to put in the caches, etc. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in geocaching but isn't sure about the details of the sport.

Very helpful introduction to the hobby although much more detailed information using GPS devices rather than Smartphone app. I felt more secure reading this but totally not necessary to learn about the hobby. Tons of information is available on their website along with videos.

This book is awesome. Some of the information is a tad bit outdated. However, majority of it is still very useful. Will definitely get another copy once a new edition comes out.

The second best book on the topic out there, after the Joy of Geocaching.

This is the book for you if you are new to geocaching. Covers tips on finding caches, proper etiquette, filling out the log book, and ideas for trade items. It also describes the special terms and words used. It is probably a good read for even experienced explorers.

I ordered two copies, one for a Geocaching raffle basket I was giving away, and one for my family. I ordered just a few days before my trade show event and it came in the nick of time to put in the basket. I've been reading my copy and it is full of basic information about Geocaching. I am sure my family and I will refer to it as we venture out this summer. I am happy with my purchase!

He brings an engineer's perspective to this fight, while not hyping anything. It's a personal account and gives everyone hope for fighting cognitive impairment.

Much of the information parallels the info I get from my Neurologist and other friends in the medical community, but the author's first-hand experience plus his own research adds a more in-depth perspective.I especially can relate to the not enjoying life, withdrawal/isolation, depression and sense of failure the accompany it. His positive experience with the exercise, social engagement and diet regimens Is interesting to see from a first party participant. My neurologist agrees that they are best hope that medical science can offer for now.Thanks for writing it and offering to us. Hope others take advantage of it too.

I know David Brown, the author of this book. In his book, David describes his descent into Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and how he is effectually fighting it. From observing him and reading his book I think he may be onto something! He describes how he had to stop driving due to AD. A couple years later I am riding around with him (his driving is fine). The book describes an approach that seems to work in his case, and it may well work in others. In addition to describing his approach to the disease, the book describes the characteristics of AD and current medical thought regarding it. The book is written for the layman, and while it provides some technical information it does so in a way that is easy to follow. Overriding all this is the compelling story of a man facing a grave personal challenge and rising to overcome it. If you are wondering (or worrying) about Alzheimer's Disease you will find this to be a helpful book.

Looking for an answer to my fears of inheriting my mother's Alzheimer's Dementia, I was particularly interested in Brown's book. At 73, I'm no spring chicken myself and I needed to know if my growing forgetfulness boded a terrifying future. One look at the Table of Contents of "Beating the Dementia Monster" was like lighting a clear path to a brighter future. This book is like a mini-library of all the things you need to know about cognitive impairment - what works and what doesn't and where to find answers. The book is well researched, well organized, concise and clear, and most importantly hopeful. Because of Mr. Brown's efforts, I am now on that "clear path," and growing older just means more opportunities to grow and learn.

I thought Dave Brown's book was very informative and in his case proves that MCI can be reversed through proper nutrition and exercise. Dave proved that there is hope for people with MCI/Alzheimer's disease that they too can make positive lifestyle changes to improve the quality of their life. One must make a decision and carry through on their commitment to change their life for the greater good because the reversal will not happen overnight.

Having seen the effects of dementia in both my maternal grandmother and my uncle, this is not a disease you want to mess with. Unfortunately, medical science has progressed little in terms of an allopathic solution to the disease. David Brown's book is an engaging read on this subject. He balances his personal experience with documented evidence of treatment options. While he and I may differ on the efficacy of supplementation in the disease process, the best point he makes is that taking charge of your health can alter the outcome positively. Cure or no cure, your own actions play a significant role in how this disease plays out. David Brown's books should inspire you to fight.

Inspiring and a quick read providing good advice. Liked the writer's approach of allowing the reader to accompany him through each step of his journey and appreciated the way he presented his measured results. This book reinforces the idea we can't sit around and wait for the medical profession to come up with a magic pill as was the case when my father passed away from Alzheimers at athe age of 72 in 2011. I can't say for certain that following the writer's suggestions would have provided my father with the same relief as it did for the writer, but it would have given him one more tool in his toolbox to fight this disease and in a much more proactive way. Thank you David for sharing your story.

Covers the scope of medical knowledge and insights to research being done to deal with dementia. But making himself an experimental animal and trying out various remedies, he finally got his life back and it maybe what will work for others. A great read for middle school boys, younger readers, or anyone interested in this legendary football player. The stories follow Brian Urlacher from a young kid, through his middle school years, and finally into high school. Each chapter highlights an obstacle he faced (like being "the short kid"--who knew?!) and how Brian worked through the challenge. Some parts were really funny, and some anecdotes made you appreciate how much teamwork can impact a kid's life. Great illustrations throughout.

Sean Jensen is an incredibly passionate storyteller and talented writer. He has a gift for capturing real life stories that truly have an impact on his readers. I wish there were more writers like him to provide our children with inspirational stories. I know that for my son and me, the story about Brian Urlacher's childhood told by Sean will have a lasting impact. I too hope that if my son is faced with adversity and challenges during his childhood, he will face them head on without excuses.

This book is a book about Brian Urlacher and thus sort career from middle school to high school. I gave this book a high rating because I love sports books. I would recommend this book to anyone who like biographies and/or sports books.

Bought this one as gift and planning on buying another book for my son for his birthday coming up later this year. Bears fan!

I gave this book to my eleven and twelve year old grandsons in Middle School. Brian Urlacher is a good man and worth listening to by young men.

My fourth grade daughter read this in a few hours. She is not a football fan, but she still enjoyed it immensely. The lessons of perseverance and overcoming adversity are universal. I highly recommend this book to parents or teachers who want their children to dream big and work hard.
