Willem Marx grew up in the UK, studied Classics at Oxford University, before graduating from New York University with an MA in Journalism. He has also worked as a television journalist at ABC News, Al Jazeera English and CBS News, and is currently a correspondent for Bloomberg TV, based in New York.Marc Wattrelot grew up in Paris, France where he attended the Sorbonne University and Sciences Po Toulouse. There he studied Geography, Political Science and Journalism. His photographic work in Balochistan won the Anthropographia Honorary Mention and has been exhibited at the New York Photo Festival, the Forum for Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland, at the Gijon Photojournalism Festival in Spain and in Paris. Marc was based in New Delhi for three years where he worked as a journalist for several French television channels. An unusual hybrid of eye-popping coffee-table book and serious analysis of the troubled Pakistani province of Balochistan. Marx is a very talented reporter: the opening anecdote of being on the run from inept Pakistani spies in a dangerous city was worthy of John LeCarre, and his profiles of people, politics, and landscape are both beautiful and revelatory. Wattrelot's pictures can speak for themselves. This book deserves more attention.

This is an amazing book about this country. The Photos are fantastic and truly show the wonderous nature of that part of the world.

Great importation about Balochistan

I purchased this thinking it would make an interesting coffee table book, but knowing very little about Balochistan (even though it comprises almost half of Pakistan) or the conflict between the Government of Pakistan and the Baloch ethno-nationalist rebels. After sitting in its plastic for close to a week, I figured I'd flip a few pages...and ended up not being able to put it down until I had read the book cover to cover. With a humanized narrative, the author takes you through a series of encounters that range from a struggling fisherman to young, idealistic activists to rebels and government agents. These encounters are artfully used to explain the region's political, ethnic and economic history, and to provide context for the area's current disorder. It's a fascinating read and also quite the adventure story. Great pictures as well but don't mistake this for your typical coffee table book like I did.

I am a little disappointed by this book, but it was my own fault. I should have read the specifications more closely and notice that it has so few pages and that it was published by scholastic. Then I would have known to expect a few clever pairs of sentences with engaging graphics and not much else.

We love this book! We first purchased it several years ago for our children, and then again this month to give as a gift. Everyone laughs, both children and adults, as they read it. I only wish it were longer. The illustrations show what hilariously horrendous things can happen when you use poor grammar. For example, "Let's eat, grandma!" is much preferred by grandmother than "Let's eat grandma!"

Wait, that should be, "Lets eat, Grandma!" Commas save lives!Buy all of Lynne Truss's books. Seriously! Okay, I'm a grammar nerd, I admit it. I got Eats, Shoots and Leaves and just loved it. Then, I learned about her "picture books." You can look at pictures side by side--same sentence, different punctuation. Perfect for all classrooms, great gift for coworkers, even college students. Great for grammar lesson plans (have kids make and draw their own). Just remember that there are a few differences between English grammar rules in America and the UK.

A great kids book that can make learning grammar rules fun (wow - I never thought I would put those words together in a sentence)! Everybody I have shown this to loves it. There are wonderfully funny drawings on each page to emphasize exactly what each sentence means so readers can grasp exactly what is wrong. I think I learned more from this book than I did from my 2nd grade grammar teacherDo not confuse this book with Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation (also by Lynne Truss).

I love this book! I'm a fanatic for grammar and this helps to teach children early on. It also gives grownups a chuckle along the way. Just in case you can't figure out why a page is incorrect, there is an answer key in the back.

As a teacher of students with learning disabilities, I am always looking for something to teach needed skills in a new way. By the time they reach high school, students should have learned grammar and punctuation rules - but all too often haven't. I suspect this is partly because of the way they have been taught in the past, and I have found that presenting the information in a new and often humorous way helps students assimilate learning they have missed in previous years. I have used the original Eats, Shoots and Leaves in class, and the pictures in this version will be even more useful.

This is not the originall book. It is just a series of examples of bad grammar. I wanted to return it, but I missed the deadline.

This is a very cute and very fun book that makes the importance and use of punctuation easy to understand. It is a book written for children, but I read and enjoyed it as an adult! It definitely will be my go-to gift item for kids - fun but functional!

A compelling book. I want to read it yet again to better understand the depth of Benzer's work. The historical review of genetics and the major players, including Mendel, Morgan, Sturtevant, and others that opened the field to the molecular revolution, gave me insights beyond my own lifetime of science. His differences of opinion with other great scientists such as Delbruck, Crick relfected the warmth and humanity of an extraordinary generation of physicists turned biologists. A delightful book to read. My only reservation is the closing chapter on human brains. He misunderstands the nature of Blindsight, and his description of Carol Miller's notions of localization of "apathy" is not up to the standard of the rest of the book.

Weiner who has won the Pulitzer for The Beak of the Finch enraptures us again with a circuitous but straightforward (how he manages that can be known only to the ghost of Proust) true tale of the life and the curiosity of Seymour Benzer the only lord of the Flies. Weiner manages to take on the life of this driven, self-motivated enthusiastic genius from Brooklyn and follow the perambulations of his decades-long study of the fruit fly. It turns out that the studies by this single man (et cohorts) have raised not only humanity's knowledge about how every part of the body finds its origin, form and function in the gene, how he has described and discovered methods to reveal how the gene acts and reacts if transplanted from one locus to another, how those who study this and reveal this information to others must, to live a moral life, must be wary of his own science and must follow Hypocrates' dictum "to do no harm." Metaphysical questions are raised along with the more mundane, making this book important, layered on all levels with differing meaning, and thought-provoking both to the meanest and to the most generous of minds. I hope the reader who reads this review will read every word in every book this kind, attentive brilliant author writes. Wiener has won all sorts of literary prizes, Benzer his subject the Nobel. What a sandwich! G Kossow in Florida PS I gave a copy of this to my surgeon on the way to getting a new battery for pacemaker right in operating room! Now THAT's enthusiasm for a book!!!!

I had to read this book for a class I was taking, and surprisingly enough it was quite an interesting read. It was written in such a way that you weren't overloaded with scientific facts, nor were you bored to tears with overly technical writing. The book does jump around quite a bit from one scientist to another which at times can make things a bit hard to follow, but overall if you're looking for a good book on the history of genetics and a ton about flies then this is will probably be a good read for you.

A must read for non-specialists who want to understand the amazing breakthroughs in genetics and the characters and backstory behind it. I couldn't put it down!

When I went to order a copy of "The Beak of the Finch" for a friend I discovered that Jonathan Weiner had also written this book. How could I have missed it all of these years? I have noticed a couple sentences that the author would not have included today (1 1/2 decades after he wrote it), but it this is another fascinating scientific history and I am thoroughly enjoying it.

As a cell biologist who dabbles in molecular biology, I can say that this book elegantly describes the science behind some of the most groundbreaking discoveries of the past century. I highly, highly recommend it.

This was such fun. My science background is a bit heavy on physics, not so much on biology. This was perfect for the educated generalist, good stories, detailed examples, clear explanations, and just fun. Enjoy!

Great gift for any Jeff Foxworthy fan. I've been getting these for my dad for the past 3 or 4 Christmases and he absolutely loves the daily jokes. He shares them with his coworkers and almost everyone enjoys them. I think if I forgot to get him this one year he would be pretty upset!

You Might Be A Redneck If..... You pre-order Jeff Foxworthy's calendar every year. What can I say? If you are amused by these gems of wit and observation you must have one. Colleagues routinely stop by my office to read the "Daily Wisdom" as we call it. Another plus is that some days the jokes are so appropriate for certain friends and family that I send it to them aqnd get much appreciation. After the daily page is torn off it becomes my note paper -- I write a message on the back and forward it. It's fun to see just how red our necks really are.

Got this for my husbands desk. We are huge fans and were pleasantly surprised by all the new jokes day after day! Great buy and even better laughs!

I am 3 chapters in and can't understand how this has good reviews. There are sentences that aren't complete which is not the biggest issue. The book starts off talking about machine learning before getting into data analysis which all is a bit too much for a beginner's guide. I have taken other programming courses in the past and none of them jump right into the deep end of the pool like this book. The fact that the book references images that aren't in the book is just crazy. How does a book (I have paperback) get published like this? And it says to load a CSV file into python yet doesn't say where to get the file from or how to load it into python. Again this book says it's a beginner's guide so where is the explanation on how to do these things? I realize I can Google how to do all these things but then what is the point of this book? Waste of money or maybe a good fire if I get too cold.

Although there are some potentially useful concepts in this book, it is in places impossible to understand because the author apparently has little understanding of grammar and syntax, and invents words (what does "performant" mean, for example). By writing in a stream-of-consciousness, barely-literate fashion, the author shows outright disrespect for the reader and, worst, demonstrates that he or she simply doesn't care. Sometimes I have to map out sentences, try to deconstruct the gibberish, and then guess as to what the author was trying to say. After wading through three sections of this book, I came to suspect that the author has no concept of programming in general, or Python in particular, and is obfuscating a lack of technical knowledge with completely-nonsensical writing. I had to abandon reading this. It was a waste of my time.

When it deals with a subject, it not only tells you how things work but also why they work that way. It helped me gain a deeper understanding of the language. It also helped me think about how to structure my code. The examples and case studies are very broad in terms of practical coverage and they themselves are good learning materials as well. This is a real book well worth the money, unlike some other books out there which in some cases are simply copy and paste from different sources.

The grammar in this book is atrocious. Sometimes sentences make no sense at all and I was left scratching my head trying to piece it together. I am positive large parts of the book were just copy and paste from a website trying to sell products.

The examples and case studies are very broad in terms of practical coverage and they themselves are good learning materials as well. This is a real book well worth the money, unlike some other books out there which in some cases are simply copy and paste from different sources. It is written simply enough for him to understand, but still covers the important things. Glad I bought it.
