"Tips" is an understated word to describe what's going on in this book. Yes, you can read it on that level, and if you're a person who keeps tools and uses them to build and/or fix stuff you'll find this book chock-a-block with forehead-slapping "why didn't I think of that" advice that will make your shop projects faster, better, and more enjoyable. But that's not the only thing that's going on here by a long shot. This book is nothing less than a capstone course in outside-the-box thinking, and even if you never directly use even one of the specific "tips" it contains, you'll come out the other side a much better creative problem solver than you went in, just by virtue of having absorbed so many great and original ideas.
Not only is this book a helpful guide to anyone's workshop; it's a loving collection of craftsmanship lore and history. An absolute must buy for anyone interested in what I consider to be the cornerstone of the maker movement: open-source, community knowledge.
This book is a wonderful compendium of tips from across the maker spectrum, and peppered with lovely anecdotes about life in the workshop. It has beautiful illustrations. I recommend picking up a copy if you're the type who likes getting their hands dirty.
There are a LOT of neat tricks in this book. As an old guy myself (well, 64), I've stood at the feet of many a clever soul over the years, and I've read a lot, too, so I already knew probably 60% of the material. But the other 40% was worth the price of admission. If you're a kid just starting out in the trades, or in life, get this book. Even if you think you've seen it all, I bet you don't beat 90% of this book.
My dad was a electrician. I helped on side jobs now and then. He also was a decent carpenter and wall paper hanger. So there has been some osmosis. I have been mucking around in electronics, a little 3d printing for about 10 years. So I've been around various tool for the many decades of my life. There are many common sense tips in this book. It is worth reading and pursuing now and then.
I'm not the most handy person when it comes to fixing things- I get the help of a friend when I can. Well, this book is like having that friend right there. Plus, the book doesn't drink all your beer, or take the tools away because you're a klutz!It's organized well, so you can quickly zero in on specific help. But you can also browse through it and learn a lot by just opening it and starting to read. The tips are short, but they're told in a way that makes them memorable, like little stories.It's a great gift for the hobbyist that has everything, or for people like me. So many great ideas, brought together in a useful way.
Whether you're a die hard DIY-er or an occasional tinkerer, this book will make it easier. The author compiles practical advice into easy to use categories that you can use as a reference. I have used his hints to concoct a home made substitute for a commercial product, drill more accurate holes, make glue work better, and get more utility out of common tools. I find myself referring to it for advice before starting anything hands-on. Usually there's a better or faster way than I thought of. There are many how-to books. This one is easy to use and gives practical solutions.
