This hiatus may be the end of me. That last panel cut open my chest, ripped out my heart, gnawed on it for a while, dropped it down a well, filled in the well with rocks, abandoned the well, found the well years later, cleaned out the well, recovered a mummified heart, and then destroyed it as part of a satanic ritual. So many tears were shed. 10/10, would recommend.

I've been a proud reader since the first issue (for those of you that haven't read Mr. Vaughan's other work, go read Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Runaways, and Private Eye right now).Ms. Staples art is among my very favorite work currently in comics. Lovingly detailed, great facial expressions, vivid colors, and interesting alien landscapes.I've written on and on about this space opera in previous reviews, and how Mr. Vaughan tackles current social issues while removing the US (and occasionally World) players/politicians out of it. He started writing this in his late 30's and now he is in his early 40's - while I love his earlier work (particularly Y), the sophistication of his dealings with romance, parenthood, death, regret, and grief is not something he would have done as a younger man. I could go on, but that is enough.Major major events happen in this volume. Things are forever changed.

If you’ve made it this far into “Saga,” you may feel, as I do, that we’ve entered into a mutual agreement with Vaughn and Staples. They’re going to manipulate our emotions and we’re going to let them . . . . because the ride is so enjoyable. I’ve never watched “This is Us,” but from hearing my co-workers discuss it, it seems like I’m going through some of the same thing with this series. They’re going to make me feel stuff, they’re going to introduce these characters that I will grow to care for and put them in fascinating situations, both fantastic and ordinary. And every now and then, they’re going to reach into my chest and tug on my heart. So we’re nine books in now, and this is the first time that I’ve felt . . . consciously manipulated instead of enjoying the ride. That was my feeling for the first part of the book anyway, but then the ending . . . well, let’s say they got me again. I’m still coming along on this trip, just to see what happens next.

Last time I got a Saga collection, it was a first for me. I went straight from the back cover to the front cover, to see it all again only better. I had never done that before, not with any comic.I got kinda that feeling with this book, only I needed to go back to #8, to catch up on what made that first sequence in this book mean so much. Problem, is I have stuff in two places and that book is in the other place. I aspire to this kind of story-telling. I draw. Not well (esp. figures) but I draw. And I've written stories - actually won a very minor cash prize for a story. So I know, very clearly: visual story-telling at this level is vastly beyond my visuals and beyond my story-telling. In equal parts, story and art, it crushes my every hope by comparison between my best to this comic's least. But still, I persist. (And I'm a guy - I hope admiration does't offend anyone.) This inspires me a tad more than it crushes me. And for sure, it has my credit card in hand already. I have no patience for the dribs and drabs the monthly comics offer, and prefer the dollar/story ratio in these collections.-- wiredweird

I had expected some deaths, I mean, it is Saga after all. But not THAT death. Not this time around. I can't even guess what will happen from here. If you're not reading Saga, I don't know what you're doing with your life.

That was perfection. So many emotions!!! I heard the creators are going on a break after this volume so we won’t have anything new for at least a year so that sucks especially with the way this volume goes.

Saga is one of the most important comics ever made. It is unashamedly confident in its wild story of family, love, sex, adulthood, parenting, childhood, friendship, and loss. For me it was a profound read, and has impacted me as a comic book reader and writer. I read volume 1 free with Kindle Unlimited, and immediately bought the entire series of graphic novels---including the volume I got for free. It's just that good! I cannot wait for volume 10.

We are only allowed so much of a breather--Hazel continues to develop but so does her relationship to the Princeling, Prince Robot continues to become more complex as does his relationships, and Vaughan reminds you that realistic narratives don't give you plot armor. Many threats convince here but aren't completely answered and Vaughan thanks us with a hiatus. The blending of anticipation and dread make perfect sense here.

My daughter loves these books!

This book was a bit above my kids' levels, but as a parent, I think it's great and they'll grow into it. I even learned a couple of facts about other places in the world! I look forward to reading it to them again when they're a bit older and can understand what we're talking about a little more.

I was really looking forward to buying this for a long time. I kept going back and forth between National Geographic and DK encyclopedias for my children to use as reference books.I am disappointed by the content. We liked the pictures but the content is so minimal and dry that my children just can't get much out of it at 6 and 4 years old. It feels like an over priced intro to the world.I wouldn't have bought it if I saw it in person.

Such a great intro to the world! It is organized by continent and for each it begins with a great two-page photo. Then there is a brief description of the continent and a map of its countries. Next is a description of the land and a wonderful map of the terrain. Weather, people, animals, and sights follow. Each continent ends with a fun project or a point of interest. The type is large and clear. The text is excellent and brief, sticking to highlights. The pictures are first rate! You cannot go wrong with this as an intro to world geography!

My 6 years old daughter loves reading this book! Beautifully illustrated!

We got this book for our son for Christmas. He's 4 1/2 and extremely interested in different parts of the world and how things work. We were so impressed by the Space book in this series that we decided to get him another. The perks are the color photographs and concise facts about the parts of the world that a child would be interested in, such as animals, plants and places.

Very good book. Enjoyed reading it with kids. We, adults, learned some new stuff from this book also. Recommend for K - 1st grade. We have all National geographic Big books, and love them all, this one didn't disappoint either!

Strange, extremely large layout inside, not much content. Not much content is expected because it's a children's book but the very enlarged layout seems like it's either accidentally cut off by printer or it was designed for people who can't see well. Also way thinner than I expected a book like this to be.

Had high hopes for this given the reviews, but was pretty disappointed.1) the photos are very dated, low resolution and looks like they were mostly pulled from stock images.2) the topics are quite shallow and the content is disappointingly inane. "Look! here is Australia, it's where the kangaroos live" By the time a six years old can read this book, they're rolling their eyes and yawning at the facts given here..

Bands of Sisters: U.S. Women's Military Bands during World War II (The American Wind Band), by Jill M. Sullivan

Review

Appearing in the "American Wind Band Series," ed. by Raoul Camus, this book considers all eight of the known women's bands and several drum and bugle corps in four branches of the military during WW II. With this project Sullivan (music education, Arizona State Univ.) synthesizes and helps preserve a substantial body of primary sources, some of which might otherwise have been lost, including military documents and personal diaries. She conducted 79 interviews with former band members, gaining not only insight about their participation in the military bands, but also information about their musical backgrounds and postwar careers. Initially organized to support units of women enlistees and to free men for combat-oriented tasks, the women's bands ultimately played more important roles by promoting patriotism at home, raising millions of dollars performing at bond drives, engaging with wounded and returning soldiers, and recruiting women for the military. For many band members, the years of service to the nation marked a highpoint in their lives--boosting self-esteem and elevating professional skills. Many interviewees identified performances in hospitals as their most important accomplishment--one perhaps linked with the subsequent development of music therapy. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-division undergraduates; general readers. (CHOICE)The opportunities presented by military service inevitably promoted new perspectives on what women could accomplish outside of the home, resulting in a lifetime of lasting relationships that would inspire future generations of musicians. Today, few remember these all-female military bands because only a small number of their performances were broadcast or pressed to vinyl. At the close of the war, these bands were dissolved and the women released from service. Based on interviews with over seventy surviving band members, Bands of Sisters tells the tale of this remarkable period in the history of American women. (International Women’s Brass Conference Newsletter)Bands of Sisters is an exciting account of women’s military bands in the United States during World War II. Traditional accounts of the history of music education have under-represented the contributions of women musicians. Historians have especially neglected the stories of female band musicians even though women performed in town bands, school bands, and professional touring bands in the nineteenth century and gained valuable experience during the school band movement of the 1920s....The chapter on “Music for the Injured Soldier’ will be especially interesting for music therapists. Near the end of the war, WAC band members were reassigned to military bases on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to welcome home injured men, and bands from several military branches performed in hospitals. The musicians entertained the men and encouraged them to participate in music activities. . . . Bands of Sisters will be of interest to anyone who has played in a band, directors of instrumental ensembles, and the general reader who is interested in the contributions of women to music education. (Music Educators Journal)Sullivan's research reveals the existence of at least seven World War II era permanent-duty women's military bands, a recreational concert band, and several collateral-duty drum and bugle corps. . . While Sullivan's research includes the use of a diverse collection of primary documents, her most interesting sources are interviews conducted with seventy-nine women, military musicians now in their eighties and nineties. (On Point: The Journal of Army History)Jill Sullivan’s Bands of Sisters: U.S. Women’s Military Bands during World War II is a ‘must read’ for every music educator. Sullivan chronicled an important piece of American history that is not only informative but at times personal, emotional, and revelatory. I cheered, I chuckled, and I cried as I read it. The passion, excitement, and pain of the women in these bands touched both my head and my heart. Clearly, this is a powerful story and, just as clearly, Sullivan told it masterfully. (Journal of Historical Research in Music Education)This book discusses armed forces and their bands and the type of training used for their musicians. Many photos give a good image of the various activities of the bands and their instrumental occupation. This is an interesting piece of history, certainly recommended. (Defilé)Bands of Sisters presents a wonderfully informative look at the long-overlooked contributions of women's military bands during World War II. Jill Sullivan's careful and exhaustive research provides both a great read and an invaluable addition to our wind band legacy. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and recommend it to all who are interested in the history of bands and band music in America. (Paula A. Crider, president, The American Bandmasters Association, Professor Emerita, The University of Texas)Dr. Sullivan has written an intriguing, thoroughly documented account of the largely neglected role of women in military bands during World War II. Using numerous oral interviews, primary and secondary written accounts, and photographs, this meticulously prepared narrative reinforces the important role that these all-female groups played in boosting morale, raising money through bond drives and even performing for injured soldiers returning home for recuperation. This is a must read for anyone interested in the history of bands in America. (William Davis Ph.D, Professor, Music Therapy, Colorado State University)Dr. Jill Sullivan gives voice to a significant part of history that has up to this point remained untold. Not only is this an important completion of the historical picture of the American wind band, but, and perhaps more importantly, these stories empower young female musicians who will now know they are part of a strong lineage of accomplished women musicians. As a woman band conductor myself, I plan to recommend this book to any young woman who wishes to pursue a career as a conductor, performer, or teacher, and anyone interested in a more complete knowledge of the history of the wind band. (Dr. Diana M. Hollinger, Project Coordinator, California Music Project, San Jose)Jill Sullivan's diligent research brings to light a previously undocumented and unique contribution to the war effort. Her Bands of Sisters is a fascinating read which finally credits the efforts of thousands of women military musicians during World War II. (Colonel John R. Bourgeois, Director Emeritus, The United States Marine Band, "The President's Own")
