This hiatus may be the end of me. That last panel cut open my chest, ripped out my heart, gnawed on it for a while, dropped it down a well, filled in the well with rocks, abandoned the well, found the well years later, cleaned out the well, recovered a mummified heart, and then destroyed it as part of a satanic ritual. So many tears were shed. 10/10, would recommend.

I've been a proud reader since the first issue (for those of you that haven't read Mr. Vaughan's other work, go read Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Runaways, and Private Eye right now).Ms. Staples art is among my very favorite work currently in comics. Lovingly detailed, great facial expressions, vivid colors, and interesting alien landscapes.I've written on and on about this space opera in previous reviews, and how Mr. Vaughan tackles current social issues while removing the US (and occasionally World) players/politicians out of it. He started writing this in his late 30's and now he is in his early 40's - while I love his earlier work (particularly Y), the sophistication of his dealings with romance, parenthood, death, regret, and grief is not something he would have done as a younger man. I could go on, but that is enough.Major major events happen in this volume. Things are forever changed.

If you’ve made it this far into “Saga,” you may feel, as I do, that we’ve entered into a mutual agreement with Vaughn and Staples. They’re going to manipulate our emotions and we’re going to let them . . . . because the ride is so enjoyable. I’ve never watched “This is Us,” but from hearing my co-workers discuss it, it seems like I’m going through some of the same thing with this series. They’re going to make me feel stuff, they’re going to introduce these characters that I will grow to care for and put them in fascinating situations, both fantastic and ordinary. And every now and then, they’re going to reach into my chest and tug on my heart. So we’re nine books in now, and this is the first time that I’ve felt . . . consciously manipulated instead of enjoying the ride. That was my feeling for the first part of the book anyway, but then the ending . . . well, let’s say they got me again. I’m still coming along on this trip, just to see what happens next.

Last time I got a Saga collection, it was a first for me. I went straight from the back cover to the front cover, to see it all again only better. I had never done that before, not with any comic.I got kinda that feeling with this book, only I needed to go back to #8, to catch up on what made that first sequence in this book mean so much. Problem, is I have stuff in two places and that book is in the other place. I aspire to this kind of story-telling. I draw. Not well (esp. figures) but I draw. And I've written stories - actually won a very minor cash prize for a story. So I know, very clearly: visual story-telling at this level is vastly beyond my visuals and beyond my story-telling. In equal parts, story and art, it crushes my every hope by comparison between my best to this comic's least. But still, I persist. (And I'm a guy - I hope admiration does't offend anyone.) This inspires me a tad more than it crushes me. And for sure, it has my credit card in hand already. I have no patience for the dribs and drabs the monthly comics offer, and prefer the dollar/story ratio in these collections.-- wiredweird

I had expected some deaths, I mean, it is Saga after all. But not THAT death. Not this time around. I can't even guess what will happen from here. If you're not reading Saga, I don't know what you're doing with your life.

That was perfection. So many emotions!!! I heard the creators are going on a break after this volume so we won’t have anything new for at least a year so that sucks especially with the way this volume goes.

Saga is one of the most important comics ever made. It is unashamedly confident in its wild story of family, love, sex, adulthood, parenting, childhood, friendship, and loss. For me it was a profound read, and has impacted me as a comic book reader and writer. I read volume 1 free with Kindle Unlimited, and immediately bought the entire series of graphic novels---including the volume I got for free. It's just that good! I cannot wait for volume 10.

We are only allowed so much of a breather--Hazel continues to develop but so does her relationship to the Princeling, Prince Robot continues to become more complex as does his relationships, and Vaughan reminds you that realistic narratives don't give you plot armor. Many threats convince here but aren't completely answered and Vaughan thanks us with a hiatus. The blending of anticipation and dread make perfect sense here.
