Author James Swanson has provided young people with a wonderful follow-up to his previous book entitled Chasing Lincoln's Killer. Bloody Times is the young peoples' version of Bloody Crimes which picks up where Chasing Lincoln's Killer left off. People are aware of John Wilkes Booth's assassination of President Lincoln and the subsequent chase that ensued. Swanson now takes young readers to the care taken to preserve Lincoln's corpse for the return round-about 18 day train ride to Springfield, Illinois for burial. This is also the story of the hunt for Confederate President Jefferson Davis who Union officials were erroneously convinced was behind Lincoln's assassination.The book's strength is in using a condensed version of his adult version entitled Bloody Crimes with an appropriate vocabulary suitable for younger readers. It would be very beneficial if more authors wrote versions of their books suitable for middle school age students. Swanson's two books entitled Chasing Lincoln's Killer and Bloody Times are excellent ideas for making history interesting reading for younger readers.

This was truly an enlightening book. One beloved character about whom we think we know so much, is made more human in death. One character who has been reviled by history is give a humanness and nobleness denied him across the ages. The evenhandedness with which James Swanson approaches these two fully American men of history is, by itself, worth the read. But he does so much more than that. He brings them both back to life and teaches us lessons in so doing.

Excellent Book. Well written and based on real evidence & fact, not like some of the made up revisionist crap being written.Highly recommended!

Enjoyable, educating, history of hate and love of the people. Two men and their beliefs. Read it just because I like history

I teach middle school and after students thoroughly enjoyed "Chasing Lincoln's Killer," I purchased "Bloody Times" and everyone likes it, too! Both of them are wonderful, historical nonfiction and the ones who read them like them a great deal.

I have read many books on the subjects of Lincoln's assassination and the Civil War era. This piece filled in some of the gaps for me.

Don't be misled by the date on the Kindle page, this books was published in 2001 and most of the information in it is extremely out of date. The discussion of many drugs cited was very inaccurate in view of what we now know. The dietary advice recommends a diet now known to be worthless for improving cardiovascular health. The discussion of blood pressure is downright quaint.Even worse, the whole point of the book is that you are supposed to take a long survey and then read appropriate sections. But the Kindle formatting makes it impossible to even read the survey as it shows up as tiny illustrations that cannot be made larger by clicking on them.A total waste of time!

Granted, I didn't read this book so much as skim through it. But I did notice that the doctor author really wrote a well-rounded book on the topic of strokes. In an easy-to-read manner he explains the different kinds of strokes and spends a lot of time on prevention: diet, exercise, and even includes recipes! At the beginning of the book he encourages the reader to take a painless survey to see one's risk factor for different kinds of stroke (I did not know there were so many). Happily for me I found out that my risk is extremely low--thus the skimming through the rest of the book!

I bought this book because I was actually interested in the information it supposedly contained. However, due to formatting or some other issue, the risk assessment was completely unreadable, which made the rest of the book basically useless since the risk assessment results were needed to determine what one might do to avoid a stroke. This was a complete waste of money and really quite frustrating.

Most of the tips in here are common-sense diet and exercise recommendations. Good relaxation techniques, and information about the causes of stroke. Not a guarantee - some things are genetic, and there are other factors, so I might have named the book: "Hopefully Stroke-Free for Life".

Downloaded to my kindle. I tried to take the test about the odds of having a stroke and the book refers you to pages for answers but the kindle version does not show page numbers so not able to take the test.😖

Very informative.... I feel that the author did a great job to combine objective medical knowledge with subjective medical expertise

Comprehensive and easy to understand. Provides the information and tools you'll need to minimize your chance of getting a stroke, including healthy recipes.

It's all right I guess, but I already know a lot of the stuff in it.

The Red Menace starts with Crossbones and the Red Skull’s daughter Sin cutting a swath of terror across the Midwest with Captain America and SHIELD agent Sharon Carter on their heels. There’s also Bucky the Winter Soldier working the shadows. The Red Skull also makes a comeback after his reported death.In the middle there’s a 65th Anniversary special for Cap with a throwback story to WWII with Bucky and the Howling Commandos. You would expect this to be something special but it’s drawn by two guys that look like they doodled in high school and never got any better. It’s another sign of how Marvel let its artwork slip down to the depths after the 80s. Thankfully the rest of the Red Menace is draw a lot better.The Red Menace was part of a trilogy by Ed Brubaker that included the Winter Soldier and the Death of Captain America. They tied together all the threads of Cap, Bucky and the Red Skull in what was one of Marvel’s major comic series of the 2000s. That’s actually a bit of a negative for this volume, because even though its the middle of the story it reads just like a primer for what the real story would become. One could read the other two without this one and not really miss out.

Book in new condition, well-packed. Shipping was slow, but I was pleasantly surprised at how very responsive to my disappointment. Daily Deals USA was eager to make things right, and I am certain that I will deal with them again, only being cognizant that the shipping may be slow - but also recognizing what a great price and quality product they offer. Additionally, the story is another excellent installment in the ongoing saga of the First Avenger - no, really; for me, Captain America was an Avenger from almost the beginning. I remember buying and reading the book where the original Avengers discovered Cap frozen in the ocean and revived him. Captain America can sometimes seem a little corny and old-fashioned in his values and upright forthrightness, but the world today needs quite a bit more of his approach to become part of day-to-day living. This story, along with the Winter Soldier saga, the Death of.. and so on are all well written updates on Cap's life story, and they explore mature themes in a mature manner. Great storytelling and artwork. I can't wait to continue re-discovering Steve Rogers et al, and encourage you to do the same if your tastes include a realistic look at a fantasy character's life behind, beyond, and without the mask...

This book was good. Second part of the Winter Soilder saga. Crossbones uses all means nessacary to make Sin remember she is a cold blooded killer and Red Skull daugther. Pretty much beats the crap out of her. When she remembers they go on a killing spree. Captian America and agent -13 go after them. They are also looking for Bucky. Red Skull is still alive. As we learned in the first book he is trapped in Lukin body. They are both sharing a body. They continue to play a high stakes cat and mouse game with Captian America . Did not need the flashback story with Bucky, Cap and the Howlings. They could have summed it up in a few flashbacks. Overall a good book

I really enjoyed this as the next chapter in the Winter Soldier story leading up to Civil War. Brubaker does a nice job of giving Captain America, Sharon Carter, Bucky Barnes, and even Crossbones and Sin real depth of character while telling a compelling story. It was also fun to see a team-up with Union Jack, Cap's British counterpart.Overall a great buy, and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the first volume. You don't need a lot of background beyond Vol. 1 to get on board with Marvel's most legendary super hero in this series.

"Red Menace" is a great follow up to "The Winter Soldier" stroyline. Ed Brubaker continues to add a ton of depth to characters that, for a while, seemed one dimensional. Unlike the first book, Nick Fury does not show up in this one which I felt detracted from the quality yet at the same time added a sense of mystery. While the build up may seem like the villian of this volume is Crossbones it actually is Red Skull yet again. So if you are looking for a cool Crossbones story this would be a good book to get but just dont expect him to be a huge part of the story.

Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting's legendary run contineus. With The Red Menace, the Winter Soldier's story continues as the bad guys make their move. This book inspired the wonderful Captain America Winter Soldier movie and continues an amazing run of stories featuring Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, and friends. Highest possible recommendation. This is a great read.

Captain America Red Menace Is much better then the 2 part Winter Soldier story-arc and with a good story and solid art Captain America: Red Menace

This run continues to be excellent. If you are looking for a good read, read the Winter Solder and then this volume. It does a great jab leading up to Civil War and showing why Cap would be opposed to it as well.

With all the tasty, easy to make foil packet recipes in this book, I may not have to ponder what's for dinner for a long time. With all the explanations, conversation temps to use these in your oven and recipes for nearly every food you can think of, this book is gem!All the recipes are high on the yummy scale!!

It's got a lot of recipes, but they all seem to require a decent amount of on the stove prep work prior to cooking in the foil packet. Seems the defeat the purpose camp cooking if I have to prepare so much ahead of time.

A wealth of great recipes to choose from including Hawaiian Rum Oranges, Spicy Jerk Wings, Sweet Potatoes with Cran-Apples and Supper on French Bread among others. Includes helpful tips with photos on how to assemble your foil packs which I found handy and an active table of contents which is always a plus. Only thing I found lacking was prep time for assembling the ingredients which I'd like to see added to the recipes as that does lengthen the process. Otherwise a savory cooking guide that I do recommend!

A nice cookbook on an underutilized cooking method. There were a wealth of recipes and this cookbook is a genuine book lengthbook which so many Kindle cookbooks are not. There were a few illustrations in the book but none really of any of the recipeswhich is an ongoing rant of mine when reviewing cookbooks. There was a nicely balanced array of recipes according to chicken, fish,pork, beef and vegetables. Even if you have a vegetarian accompanying you there are plenty of vegetarian dishes to satisfy this type ofperson.There were no nutritional values listed but all in all not a bad cookbook and certainly worth your while because there are just not that manyfoil cooking cookbooks on the market.The reivewer is the author of the new Kindle book entitled: Sex Education for Adults Secrets To Amazing Sex and Happily Ever After Too

Very useful tips on cooking with foil and how to place certain food in the packet.Love the chart of cooking temperatures of the meat inside the packets. Takes all the guess work out of how hot things have to be.Colorful pictures of each step by step instructions explained. No pictures of the finished product or nutritional information.Foil steak supper would be my favorite to try. So many combinations and suggestions for spices.Lots of different main meats for meals along with breakfast and desserts and miscellaneous dishes to make. Authors other works are highlighted at the end.

CAMPING RECIPES: FOIL PACKET COOKINGBy Bonnie ScottEven though the percentage of recipes I highlighted to try is on the low side, I thought this was a great cook book. I highlighted 67 out of 100 recipes. This is a 67% success rate. I liked the uniqueness of the subject. I loved the opening tutorial section with step-by-step instructions with photographs. I liked the cute graphics used in the chapter dividers. I liked that there were icons at the ends of the recipes to tell if you could make the recipe over the campfire or on the grill. I wish they had included instructions on how to make in the oven at home. This cook book lacks writing content.Some of the recipes from this book that I would like to try are:1. Oriental Chicken2. Coconut Shrimp3. Foil Steak Supper4. Grilled Potato SlicesRating: 4 stars

This has some really good recipes in it and some that I would never cook. One of the things I really liked about this book is that they put cooking time for using a campfire, grill, or oven. One of the things I didn't like about the book is that several recipes tell you to brown the meat/chicken first. If I'm going to use a pan to brown something I might as well just cook it in it. I expected all the recipes to use foil and ONLY foil.

I wish I had found this book when I was still taking my children camping on a regular basis. We have run the list from backpacking, to tent camping to campers and 5th wheels. These recipes would have worked for all of them. If you live in or travel in a camping vehicle these will work for you as well and leave you with little clean up after a meal. We now just take food along when on long car trips. I can see taking my one or two burner stove and perhaps a dutch oven to cook in. Just put the packets in and cook to the desired doneness. No Mess to clean up. Just find a garbage container. I am so looking forward to doing this. With a little home prep you can have a good meal.

I was afraid that this cookbook would have a lot of recipes using processed foods like canned soup that I go to great lengths to avoid. But I was wrong. Okay, there are a couple. But mostly, the recipes feature fresh herbs, vegetables and fruits. I haven't tried any of the recipes, but my claim to fame as a cook is being able to tell good recipes from bad and I am confident that there are some gems in here. I'm really excited to try the simple recipe with tilapia and salsa and also the apple crisp.

Workbook-style pages are liberally sprinkled throughout and range from checklists to fill in the blanks. The information reads like a manual for "How to Succeed in...." Many of the ideas presented seem banal, but might present new librarians with concepts they did not encounter in library school. Experienced librarians will find the ideas a rehash of journal articles and seminars. This book is very helpful if you are planning on becoming a librarian. Very helpful tips are given about how to advocate for the library and how to deal with administrators. Actually, school administrators in general could benefit from this book.

Dr. Hartzell, who has never been a school librarian, may just be the biggest fan of school librarians. By writing this book from the viewpoint of a school administrator, he very carefully outlines the influence and power the school librarian has...if she chooses to claim it. He also details how the school librarian can take this influence in the school and turn in it to a powerful advocacy for school libraries. In a very nice way, he tells us what we are doing wrong(or what we may not know to do) and then he maps out what can be done to correct it. I love solutions and he gives us many. This book changed the way I thought about school libraries and what they can do for schools.
